Kari Lake couldn’t win voters. Now Gallego will make history

Ruben Gallego grew up poor, but worked hard to get to this place. Now he’s poised to become Arizona’s first Spanish-speaking U.S. senator.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego is poised to become the first Hispanic from Arizona to serve in the U.S. Senate.

Not bad for a kid who grew up poor, working as a janitor and at a meatpacking plant to help his single mother.

You can say he is a fighter, graduated from Harvard University, served in naval combat and in Congress.

“As a child, I would sleep on our living room floor so my sisters could have beds,” Gallego said Tuesday night. He looked confident and added that he would soon go to the US Senate hearing.

The race hasn’t been called yet, but he led Republican opponent Kari Lake by more than 61,000 votes in early results.

If that win holds, it would be monumental. Defeating Lake, Donald Trump’s protege and election denier, is no small feat.

It appears voters have had enough of Lake, who has yet to accept losing her 2022 gubernatorial bid against Gov. Katie Hobbs.

In any case, Arizonans, who in the early voting results also seemed to favor Donald Trump as president, came to their senses and saw Gallego as the best choice.
