Keegan Bradley reiterates stance on LIV golfers in Ryder Cup

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. — Following his victory at the BMW Championship on Sunday, Keegan Bradley made it clear he expects to have LIV Golf members to choose from next year if they qualify for his U.S. Ryder Cup team.

Bradley, 38, was the surprise pick by the PGA of America last month to lead the 2025 U.S. team at Bethpage Black on Long Island next year. He is the youngest American captain since Arnold Palmer captained East Lake, site of next week’s Tour Championship, in 1963.

Bradley said he would like to qualify for his own team, but he said Sunday at Castle Pines that he doesn’t expect to see any changes in the qualification criteria. Six players will automatically qualify a year from now, while most opportunities to earn points begin in January.

However, American LIV players like Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka are not eligible for points. Bradley made it clear that the rules must include these points to be eligible.

“I’m going to have the best 12 players, so the PGA of America … we’re going to have the best 12 players, so they have to figure that out, if that’s their problem,” Bradley said after his one-shot victory over Sam Burns, Ludvig Aberg and Adam Scott. “I know you have to be a member of the PGA (of America) to play in the Ryder Cup.

“That’s the only condition you need. So we make sure that if some of those guys that we think might make the team, we make sure they’re in.”

Last year, Koepka was the only LIV player selected by captain Zach Johnson, who has sometimes been reserved about how much attention a LIV golfer would receive. He was criticized for saying he would have a hard time judging them because he couldn’t see them play in LIV events.

The Ryder Cup qualifying process has already begun, as players have been able to earn points at major championships and the Players Championship this year. DeChambeau, who won the US Open, is third behind Xander Schauffele and Scottie Scheffler.

“I don’t see any major adjustments,” Bradley said. “I think the system – to get to the top six – is really tough. I don’t think – they always identify the top six, I think, on the American side.

“The only strange area is the LIV guys, what they do and where they are on the list. We really need to work with the captains and the team that’s going to be there and figure that out.

“But I think the system works. I haven’t heard anyone, any previous captain, talk about how they would change it. But we’re going to look at it.”
