Kevin Costner responds to ‘Yellowstone’ outrage over John Dutton’s death

Kevin Costner isn’t shaking his head over the reaction to the murder of his ‘Yellowstone’ character.

The 69-year-old actor played John Dutton on the Paramount Network show, which last appeared in Part 1 of Season 5 in 2022. Costner announced in June that he would not return to “Yellowstone” amid rumors of a feud with creator Taylor Sheridan.

The ranch drama returned for the second half of the season earlier this month and killed off its character, much to fans’ dismay.

An assassin fatally shot John, making it look like a suicide. Fans later find out that his son Jamie’s girlfriend (Wes Bentley) orchestrated his murder plot.

Costner addressed the outrage surrounding Dutton’s death at the 2024 Governors Awards in Los Angeles on November 17, after fans criticized Sheridan while claiming the character deserved a better send-off.

“Fans have a voice in things,” the Oscar winner told E! News, “and they choose to follow things.”

Costner said it was up to producers to decide what to do with Dutton after the star revealed he would not be returning for part two of the series due to scheduling issues with his four-part film anthology ‘Horizon: An American Saga’. ”

“I suggested how to do it a while ago,” Costner told the outlet of his character’s departure; however, he would not share what those ideas were.

“Who am I? They do what they want. That’s fine with me,” the star joked.

Coster weighed in on Dutton’s death on November 11, just hours after the episode aired.

When he appeared on SiriusXM’s “The Michael Smerconish Program,” he said he “didn’t know it actually aired last night.”

‘That is a moment to swear to God. I swear to God,” he explained. “I mean, I see ads with my face everywhere and I think, ‘Gosh, that’s not me.’ I’m not there this season. But I didn’t know yesterday was the thing. Someone said, ‘It played last night?’ And I said, ‘Hmm, okay.’ So no, I found out this morning.”

When asked how he felt about John’s death, Costner said, “I didn’t see it.” I heard it’s suicide. That doesn’t make me want to rush out to see it.

Costner also addressed his departure from the show and the rumors that he was quitting ‘Yellowstone’ for his new Western film series ‘Horizon’.

“I didn’t really have to leave anything behind. There were holes out there,” he said. “There were contractual things that allowed both things to be done, but because both things were contractual you had to make room for the other. There was space, but it was difficult for them to stick to their schedule. It was just too hard for them to do it.”

He added: “There was a time when whatever happened you could deal with it. But I didn’t leave. I haven’t quit the show. OK? I had contracted to do all three. There was a contract drawn up to do all three. And within a period of about eight months, two more different types of contracts were negotiated. Not at my request, but at their request to try things.”

Part two of season 5 is rumored to be the series finale. However, there is speculation that a season 6 about Beth and Rip could be in the works, with one of the show’s stars exclusively hinting to The Post that season 5 might not be the last.

There are also several “Yellowstone” spinoffs in the works, including an upcoming one called “The Madison” starring Michelle Pfeiffer.

“Yellowstone” airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on Paramount Network.
