Kevin Durant doesn’t think his NBA career will earn him a statue like Dwyane Wade

The topic of which NBA players deserve a statue outside an arena when they retire has come up a lot lately since Dwyane Wade’s statue was unveiled outside the Miami Heat’s Kaseya Center.

In his speech at the statue’s unveiling, Wade named three current NBA players who he believes deserve a statue after the end of their careers: LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant.

When Kay Adams asked Durant about this shoutout, Durant said he was honored, but he doesn’t think he will deserve a statue.

“I highly doubt I’ll have a statue of me put up anywhere because I play basketball,” Durant said. “Usually it’s those guys who got the Hall of Fame career, with championships, you’ve been with one city for a long time. That’s not the case with me.”

Durant’s career definitely looks different than that of NBA players who do receive statues. Durant played on four teams and won two NBA titles with the Golden State Warriors. But NBA fans typically don’t think of the Warriors first when they hear Durant’s name; it’s probably the Oklahoma City Thunder, where Durant started his career and played the longest. But he didn’t win any titles with the Thunder.

It’s different for Curry, who stayed with the Warriors his entire career and led the team to four NBA titles, and for James, who has bounced between teams but won four titles with three different teams.

Only time will tell if Durant deserves a statue outside an arena one day, his career isn’t quite over yet.
