Kim Kardashian visits parents-murderers Erik and Lyle Menendez in prison after Netflix show controversy

Kim Kardashian and Cooper Koch, star of Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendezis said to have visited convicted murderers Erik and Lyle Menendez, along with other inmates, at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego County this weekend.

Yesterday, Erik Menendez’s wife Tammi posted a statement on social media describing Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series Monsters as ‘unfair’ and ‘discouraging slander’.

According to TMZKardashian was joined by her sister Khloe Kardashian, her mother Kris Jenner and film producer Scott Budnick, along with Koch, who plays Erik Menendez in the new series.

Kardashian, a longtime advocate for criminal justice reform, reportedly spoke to the inmates about prison reform. She also spoke about the Greenspace Project, which promotes rehabilitation by beautifying prison gardens, in which both Menendez brothers have been involved.

The brothers are serving life sentences for the 1989 murder of their parents, José and Kitty. They were arrested for first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder outside their home in March 1990 and convicted in 1996. In 2024, new evidence emerged that could potentially get them free.

Monsters starring Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny as José and Kitty, with Koch and Nicholas Chavez as the brothers.

In a statement posted on X/Twitter by his wife Tammi, Erik Menendez responded to the series by saying, “I believed we had moved past the lies and the ruinous character portrayals of Lyle, and had created a caricature of Lyle that was rooted in the horrible and blatant lies that were rampant on the show. I can only believe they were done on purpose.

“It is with a heavy heart that I say that I believe Ryan Murphy cannot be so naive and inaccurate about the facts of our lives that he can do this without malicious intent.

“It is sad to know that Netflix’s dishonest portrayal of the tragedies surrounding our crimes has taken the painful truth several steps back – back in time to an era when the prosecution built a narrative on a belief system that men were not sexually abused and that men experienced rape trauma differently than women.

“Those terrible lies have been challenged and exposed over the past two decades by countless brave victims who have overcome their personal shame and bravely spoken out. So now Murphy is fleshing out his terrible story through disgusting and appalling character portrayals of Lyle and me and dispiriting smears.

“Isn’t the truth enough? Let the truth be the truth. How demoralizing to know that one man with power can undermine decades of progress in illuminating childhood trauma. Violence is never an answer, never a solution, and is always tragic.

“I hope it will never be forgotten that violence against a child creates hundreds of horrific and silent crime scenes, darkly overshadowed by the glitz and glamour and rarely revealed until the tragedy has sunk in for all involved. To everyone who has reached out to me and supported me, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

The Independent has reached out to Murphy’s representative for comment on the statement.

Since the series hit Netflix on Thursday, viewers have been warning others on social media about the graphic nature of the violence depicted in the series.
