Kopech survives shaky ninth inning in Game 3 of the World Series

Former White Sox pitcher Michael Kopech was called up in the ninth inning to take Game 3 of the World Series on Monday night. The inning turned out to be a little more eventful than Kopech and the Dodgers had imagined.

With the Dodgers holding a commanding 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, Dave Roberts handed Kopech the ball to the bottom half of the Yankees lineup. The inning started well. Kopech set up Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe with three straight four-seam fastballs to take the lead on the count 1-2 before throwing him off balance with a high slider for a strikeout.

Kopech went back to the fastball against Anthony Rizzo, but couldn’t locate it as he walked the left-handed first baseman on five pitches. A wild pitch then put Rizzo in scoring position. Kopech responded by causing a soft pop-out off Austin Wells’ bat.

But with just one more out needed to reach Game 3, the Yankees turned up the pressure. Alex Verdugo took a 99 mph fastball into the inside corner for the first strike. He then saw a 100 mph fastball go over the heart of the plate for strike two. He wasn’t fooled on the third fastball. Kopech tried to sneak past him and made a mistake on a heater of 160.2 km per hour. Koepch tried to go back to the fastball one more time, but Verdugo hit the ball to right field for a two-run homer. Despite shaving the Dodger lead in half, Kopech was credited with securing the final out five pitches later when he got Gleyber Torres to ground out on a 100-mph fastball.

It’s still a little strange to see Kopech pitching in a World Series the same year he was calling games for a 41-win White Sox team. But to Kopech’s credit, he took the opportunity to play for a contender and is now just one match away from winning a ring.
