KSHB 41 Weather blog | This is how you prepare for severe weather on Wednesday

Happy Halloween evening, weather blog readers!

It’s certainly a spooky morning outside with the strong southerly winds, very warm temperatures and high humidity for late October.

You may get the feeling that the weather is changing on the horizon.

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed our area in threat levels 2 and 3 for severe storms this evening.

The Kansas City metro is at an elevated risk level (3 of 5) for severe weather as a very strong cold front moves through.

THREATS:
The main concern remains damaging wind gusts, reaching speeds of 60 to 75 miles per hour, along a line of thunderstorms.

However, it will also be important to monitor the potential for tornadoes.

The SPC has indicated a rare 10% chance of strong tornadoes in our area.

This prospect has our attention because of how rare it is this late in the fall season!

The area of concern extends from northern Oklahoma to eastern Kansas and up to the state line.

This tells us that there is a higher chance of seeing a strong, destructive tornado from the right storm. This also says there is a 90% chance we won’t see a tornado.

Visit Cassie Wilson’s blog from yesterday for more on this!

TIMING:
Morning until 2 p.m. — Cloudy, warm and windy with occasional rain or thunderstorms.

Any development that forms in this window will not be severe and will help limit supercell development ahead of the storm line. This is good news.

2:00 PM to 6:00 PM — Isolated strong storms may form ahead of the main line. These can roll over KC.

Upper level support will be limited for these storms, so not too concerned, but worth watching.

6:00 PM to Midnight — This is the time frame in which we would like you to remain AWARE!

A line of storms will barrel toward Kansas City bringing heavy rain (up to 1-2 inches) and most likely damaging winds. If a tornado were to form, it would be along the leading edge and would be short-lived, short-lived, and weak. Something we will keep a close eye on.

The biggest impact for KC will be between 9:00 PM and 11:00 PM
