Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers injury updates, with good news on Brock Purdy

The San Francisco 49ers dropped their 38-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers with a handful of injury issues, but head coach Kyle Shanahan did have some positive news about quarterback Brock Purdy during his conference call on Monday.

Shanahan told reporters that Purdy got some light on Monday and the pain did not return to his shoulder, which is a good sign for his chances of moving up before Week 13. Purdy missed Week 12 due to a shoulder injury suffered in Week 11 against the Seattle Seahawks. He was limited in practice through Week 12 and then ruled out Friday due to the injury report.

This week he will have a rest day on Tuesday with a chance to train again on Wednesday.

With the 49ers hoping to be on life support after the season, Purdy’s health could be the biggest factor in whether they have a chance to fight their way back into the playoffs. The fact that he made positive progress on Monday is a good first step in getting him back.

The updates on defensive ends Nick Bosa and Trent Williams were less optimistic. Shanahan said both are still in daily use, although their status for week 13 is still up in the air.

Shanahan also had updates on players playing in Sunday’s game.

Two offensive linemen, left guard Aaron Banks and right guard Dominick Puni, were beaten during the game. Banks is on a concussion protocol. Puni has a shoulder problem and the team is waiting for an MRI.

Defensive tackle Jordan Elliott is also in concussion status after leaving the game early.

Cornerback Deommodore Lenoir is also dealing with a knee issue that required an MRI. The 49ers are waiting for those results. Lenoir has been their best defensive back this season, and losing him would be a major blow to their secondary. If he can’t go, rookie Renardo Green would likely move to the slot, while Isaac Yiadom and possibly Charvarius Ward would get the start on the outside. Ward is still working on his return after a lengthy absence due to a personal tragedy. However, Green is dealing with a neck injury on a daily basis, according to Shanahan.

The injuries were tough for San Francisco in Green Bay. Things could be even worse in Week 13 when they visit the Buffalo Bills on Sunday Night Football.
