LA Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh to briefly leave Broncos game for health reasons

Former Michigan and current Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh briefly left the sidelines during Sunday’s game against Denver with an apparent illness, causing an uproar among the football community.

Harbaugh would later return to the Los Angeles sideline as the Chargers defeated the Broncos 23-16. The head coach explained the reason for his short departure during his post-match press conference.

“It’s called atrial flutter,” Harbaugh said. “I started it today. The doctors checked me and it came back into sinus rhythm, a normal rhythm. I could see there were some irregular beats.”

Normally, Harbaugh kept his team’s injury information close to the vest, but he joked that he was willing to take the plunge on his own health status.

“I’m medically qualified to talk about it,” he joked. “If it’s me, I’m allowed to.”

Harbaugh revealed that he has had a brief history of atrial flutter in the past, including another time while coaching an NFL game.

“I’ve had a couple of ablations, one in 1999 and one in 2012,” he said. “I always remember the one from 2012 because it was on the Monday Night game. Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers against the Chicago Bears, and Colin had a great night that night. I ended up having to have an ablation for that because it wouldn’t come anymore in rhythm. But 2-0 with cardiac arrhythmias.”

During his weekly press conference on Monday, current Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore said he had a text message exchange with Harbaugh following Harbaugh’s minor health issues.

“I texted him. He’s going to the doctor today,” Moore said. ‘He better go! I hope he’s doing well.’
