  • A cold front brings storms and cooler weather to the eastern US
  • Travelers may face delays and disruptions as the storms move east.
  • Parts of the Deep South and Gulf Coast could experience multiple days of storms.
  • A change in the pattern in the Pacific Northwest will bring cooler temperatures on Labor Day.

A cold front moving across the eastern United States brings good and bad news this Labor Day weekend: Some regions will see cooler temperatures by the time the holiday arrives, but in others, travel plans and outdoor gatherings could be disrupted by rain and thunderstorms.

Temperatures are also dropping in the Northwest this long weekend, but the cooling will come without any thunderstorms or other major problems.

Who’s getting rained on their proverbial parade?

Saturday

The cold front begins the weekend stretching from Texas to Maine on Saturday, and scattered thunderstorms are possible throughout the day in the Deep South. The storms will move through the Ohio Valley and eastern Great Lakes early Saturday morning before reaching the coast and cities like New York and Boston late Saturday night.

Sunday

Most of the northeast will clear up on Sunday morning, but major airports may still see showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon, with some associated delays.

In the Deep South, the front remains in the region and Houston, New Orleans and Miami could all get another day of thunderstorms.

The Gulf Coast of Texas and Louisiana should also expect flash flooding this weekend as tropical moisture is brought north to coastal areas.

Monday

On Labor Day, the cold front will begin to move away from the East Coast, but more showers and thunderstorms are possible in the Southeast and Gulf Coast in the afternoon.

Monday is also expected to be the coldest day of the weekend across the country, thanks to a cold front that will push record heat away from the eastern U.S. and a pattern change that will bring cooler air into the Pacific Northwest.

Temperatures in the Midwest will drop from 80 to 88 degrees Fahrenheit over the weekend. In Portland, temperatures could drop from 91 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit on Saturday to 80 degrees Fahrenheit on Monday.
