Laken Riley murder suspect Jose Ibarra found guilty

A 26-year-old man was convicted of the murder of Laken Riley after days of an emotionally charged trial in which details of her gruesome murder emerged.

Riley, 22, was killed on February 22 while jogging on the campus of the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia.

Jose Ibarra was found guilty of murder by an Athens judge, whose verdict was broadcast live on Court TV.

Ibarra was found guilty of one count of malice murder, three counts of murder and kidnapping, aggravated assault with attempted rape, aggravated battery, obstructing a 911 call, tampering with evidence and peeping.

As Judge H. Patrick Haggard announced the sentence, Ibarra sat quietly and showed no visible reaction.

He told the court he had taken into account prosecutor Sheila Ross’ comments that the evidence against Ibarra was “overwhelming”, referring to her powerful closing statement.

“She marked him. She marked it for everyone to see. She marked it for you to see,” Ross shared during her closing remarks, per ABC.

Riley, a nursing student at Augusta University, disappeared the morning of her death and was later found with “visible injuries.”

A medical examiner determined she died of blunt force trauma to the head, an Athens-Clarke County coroner previously told PEOPLE. Her death, police previously said in an arrest affidavit, assaulted her by “disfiguring her skull.”

During the four-day trial, the judge was presented with extensive evidence, including DNA and security footage, that led to Ibarra’s conviction.

Prosecutors presented testimony from Riley’s roommate who first noticed she was missing, along with that from investigators and translators. During the trial, Ibarra was exposed as a man seemingly unrepentant and “giggled” when he was taken in for questioning, presenting Riley’s final moments: a message to her mother and later seen on security footage.

Ibarra, a Venezuelan citizen, entered the country illegally in 2022, immigration officials previously said, according to CBS. Los Angeles Times and ABC News.
