Lakers’ Anthony Davis and Rui Hachimura to miss game vs. Grizzlies

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis sat out Wednesday night’s 131-114 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies due to a left heel contusion.

Davis tested the injury during a pregame practice and determined he could not play.

Lakers coach JJ Redick said Davis did not undergo imaging of the foot after aggravating it late Monday in the team’s loss to the Detroit Pistons.

“From what I understand, it’s something that’s been bothering him a little bit on and off all summer and so far this season,” Redick said before the game. “We will obviously miss him very much.”

LA, which fell to 1-4 on its current road trip, returns home to host the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday. Redick said Davis could be available for that game.

“I think for all of us, we want to take a long-term view of the health of all of our players over an 82-game season,” Redick said. “I just talked to him before I came to talk to you guys. He was very positive about how it felt, but we realize we have a long flight back to LA, we have to turn around and do it again on Friday. So hopefully the 48 an extra hour of rest will be good.”

Aside from missing Davis’ league-leading 32.6 points per game, the Lakers were also down a starter against the Grizzlies when Rui Hachimura was ruled out due to an illness.

Backup center Christian Koloko, a two-way signee who was recently cleared to return by the NBA’s fitness-to-play panel after being out of action since April 2023 due to a blood clot issue, played against Memphis. He had two points in 13 minutes.

“The game was almost taken away from me,” Koloko said after shootaround on Wednesday. “I’m just grateful to be here right now. So I’m going to embrace every moment I have on a basketball court right now. And you never know what could happen. But yeah, I’m just happy to be here And I’m sure the first match will be a special one.”
