LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Lancaster County’s elections commissioner is calling a social media post from last weekend “false and misleading.”

In a news release Monday, Elections Commissioner Todd Wiltgen said a “malicious group of conspiracy theorists” posted a video of a man returning his ballot.

The group “falsely” suggested the voter did something wrong, the elections office said.

Election officials reviewed surveillance footage from the mailbox and identified the voter.

The “young man” returned his ballot for his first presidential election and took a selfie to “commemorate” the milestone

“It is shameful and unAmerican to intimidate and threaten anyone exercising their right to vote,” Wiltgen said in the press release.

The election office contacted Lincoln police after seeing responses to the social media posts threatening the voter.

“It is unfortunate that this group is spreading false and misleading information to mislead the public and undermine confidence in our elections,” Wiltgen said. “They should remove the post and apologize immediately.”
