Laney Choboy Makes Memorable Stand for Nebraska Volleyball in Creighton Clash

The No. 5 Nebraska Huskers held on to defeat the No. 9 Creighton Bluejays in five sets (25-19, 25-16, 31-33, 16-25, 15-10) on Tuesday at the Devaney Center.

With the win, Nebraska is now 23-0 all-time against its in-state rival.

The third set, however, will remain for the rest of the season. It never seemed like it would end, and even though Creighton won, the memory of Laney Choboy in the front row will live forever.

Choboy, who is 5 feet 3 inches tall, held his own and head coach John Cook revealed after the game what led to that.

“I was surprised,” he said of how well the team played with Choboy up front. “They told me not to make any substitutions, but I really thought we were going to win it. We had two shots to win it with her in the back row and then we couldn’t get it done.

“This is what I told them: ‘We did that because I wanted you guys to have some memories from this game that you can talk about for a long time.’ Laney’s going to be talking about that on TikTok for a couple of weeks.”

The lineup wasn’t ideal for such a crucial set with intense scoring, but the Huskers were resilient. They didn’t play as if their defensive specialist was on the front row.

“She did a great job,” Andi Jackson said with a laugh of Choboy’s front-row play. “Her hands were up, she was ready to go. I saw those crossover moves. No, but coach always says the best have to adapt. We may not have won the set, but I think we did a great job. Laney in particular and all the girls that were on the court.

“We just laughed because I didn’t even know Laney was in front until after four points because I think our team adjusted so well and we just kept playing,”

Choboy finished the game with 12 digs and two assists, a season record.

Nebraska has now won 28 consecutive home games in three seasons and hosts The Nebraska Classic this weekend with games against Arizona State and Wichita State.
