Latest forecast shows storm heading toward Louisiana as meteorologists warn of ‘life-threatening storm surge’

Francine was upgraded to a hurricane Tuesday night and is expected to make landfall along the Louisiana coast on Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center said.

In their latest warning, NHC meteorologists warned of “life-threatening storm surge and hurricane-force winds” in Louisiana.

According to an alert from the NHC at 11 a.m. ET:

  • Location: Approximately 150 miles southwest of Morgan City, La., approximately 85 miles west of New Orleans

  • Maximum sustained wind: 90 mph

  • Current movement: Northeast at 13 mph

Meteorologists expect Francine to make landfall in Louisiana on Wednesday afternoon or evening.

“Francine is expected to bring 4 to 8 inches of total rainfall, with local amounts of up to 12 inches across southeastern Louisiana, Mississippi, extreme southern Alabama and the Florida Panhandle through Thursday evening,” a warning from the hurricane center warned. “This rainfall could result in significant flash flooding and urban flooding.”

WAFB, the CBS affiliate in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, reported that school districts across the state closed schools on Tuesday and that several districts will also be closed on Wednesday.

President Biden on Tuesday approved a state of emergency for Louisiana after Gov. Jeff Landry requested federal aid. He had declared a state of emergency on Monday.

  • The coast of Louisiana from the Vermilion/Cameron line, Louisiana, eastward to Grand Isle, Louisiana.

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for:

  • The Louisiana coast east of Sabine Pass at Port Arthur, Texas, to Vermilion/Cameron Line, La.

  • East of Grand Isle, La., to the Alabama/Florida border

  • From Intracoastal City, La., to Port Fourchon, La.: 5-10 ft.

  • Vermilion Bay, Louisiana: 5-10 ft.

  • Port Fourchon, La., to the mouth of the Mississippi River, La.: 4-7 ft.

  • Mouth of the Pearl River, Louisiana, to Ocean Springs, Ms.: 4-6 ft.

  • Lake Pontchartrain, La.: 4-6 ft.

  • Ocean Springs, Miss., to Mississippi/Alabama border: 3-5 ft.

  • Cameron, La., to Intracoastal City, La.: 3-5 ft.

  • Lake Maurepas, La.: 3-5 ft.

Severe weather warnings mean that bad weather is expected in a certain area in the next 36 hours. Warnings indicate that bad weather is expected within the next 48 hours.
