‘Life-threatening’ flooding shown on video as storm makes landfall

On Monday, video captured the potential tropical cyclone causing eight life-threatening floods as the storm made landfall near the North Carolina-South Carolina state border.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) began issuing warnings on Sunday about the storm, which was then barreling off the southeastern coast of the United States, and warned in a social media post of the “life-threatening” effects of flash flooding. after on Monday. Meteorologists were monitoring the storm, which had a high chance of strengthening into Tropical Storm Helene, the eighth named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season. Although the storm reached tropical storm strength, it never reached the necessary structure to be classified as a tropical storm, said Dan Brown, the NHC’s hurricane specialist unit chief. Newsweek.

Although the storm was never declared a tropical storm, it poses a significant threat to North Carolina. Video footage, for example, shows the extent of the flash flooding that occurred at Carolina Beach in the southeastern part of the state.

“Wild #flashflood going on in #carolinabeach and around SE #NorthCarolina,” documentary filmmaker Jonathan Petramala posted Monday on X, formerly Twitter. His post included video of widespread flooding blanketing the city.

The National Weather Service (NWS) office in Wilmington, North Carolina, also commented on the severity of the floodwaters.

“Roads are at least 3 feet deep under water in parts of Carolina Beach,” NWS Wilmington posted on X, with a photo showing floodwaters halfway up a van. “No car or truck is designed to safely drive through floodwaters this deep. Please stay off the roads.”

More than 12 inches of rain fell in the Carolina Beach area, which is “extremely unusual,” NWS meteorologist Tim Armstrong said. NewsweekThe storm is now threatening heavy rainfall between 3 and 6 inches in Brunswick, North Carolina.

Armstrong said it will take time for the floodwaters in Carolina Beach to drain, as high tide is at 6:30 p.m. local time tonight. However, once high tide comes in, the floodwaters will drain quickly, he said.

Armstrong added that calm weather is forecast for the next few days, which will aid in the cleanup effort.

According to Brown, rainfall is one of the biggest threats to the storm, along with tropical storm force winds and the threat of tornadoes.

“Those winds are already decreasing and will decrease even further as the system moves inland,” Brown said, adding that the threat of locally heavy rainfall will shift to the Mid-Atlantic states in the coming days.

Tropical storm warnings, flash flood warnings and tornado warnings, along with numerous other weather-related advisories, were in effect for the coast of North Carolina and South Carolina on Monday afternoon.

In addition to potential Tropical Cyclone Eight, the NHC is also monitoring Tropical Depression Gordon.
