Lions make a big statement with a dominant win to embarrass Cowboys

You’re going to hear a lot about the Dallas Cowboys this week. When the most popular team in the NFL is embarrassed at home, as the Cowboys did on Sunday, it’s a big talking point.

But perhaps Sunday said more about the Detroit Lions.

The Lions have looked great, although the loss of defender Aidan Hutchinson to a terrible leg injury will be a problem for them this season. Still, the Lions’ offense continues to show that it may be the best in the NFL. Detroit did what it wanted on offense and the defense also stymied Dallas all day in a 47-9 victory. The Lions looked like a legitimate Super Bowl contender, but that’s no surprise.

Dallas seemed far from competing for anything meaningful, but the biggest takeaway from Sunday could be just how good the Lions can be.

The Lions had some unfinished business from last season, when they thought they were denied a win because, according to the Lions, officials incorrectly identified which offensive lineman was in line for a tricky two-point conversion. On the first day of play, the Lions sent Dan Skipper to declare eligible. There is an ironic comment in it, but also a message that Detroit had not forgotten last season’s loss.

Then Detroit played like it was getting revenge. The Lions even had a flea flicker, with Amon-Ra St. Brown throwing it back to Jared Goff on a reverse, and Goff hitting Sam LaPorta downfield for a 52-yard touchdown. They later tried to pass the ball across the goal line to attack Taylor Decker – whose two-point conversion was canceled out by the controversial penalty last season – although it was unsuccessful.

Late in the third quarter, with the Lions leading 37-9, they ran a hook-and-ladder play to their other offensive tackle Penei Sewell, although it was called back for a penalty. The Lions were clearly out to make a statement and didn’t much care if the Cowboys’ feelings were hurt. And it came on Jerry Jones’ birthday of all days.

The Cowboys didn’t do themselves any favors. Dak Prescott threw a bad interception in the end zone when the Cowboys were down 7-3, and that was a turning point. Or maybe it was inevitable that the Lions would wipe out the Cowboys.

Detroit looked better in every way on Sunday. It’s okay to project that onto the Cowboys, who have played at home three times and been blown away each time.

But the Lions look like one of the best teams in the NFL.

Next week the Lions play the 5-0 Minnesota Vikings, a game that could be crucial in determining who wins the NFC North.

Detroit playing without Hutchinson will impact that game and every other game the Lions will play without him. Maybe they can win shootouts. The Lions are versatile on offense, thanks in large part to their excellent offensive line. They can run it however they see fit with Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. Or, with their multitude of receiving options, Jared Goff could put up some huge numbers. He had 315 yards and three touchdowns on Sunday. The Lions had 492 yards as a team.

Detroit is coming off a loss, but has looked like one of the best teams in the NFL all season. Next week they can show if they are the best team in the NFC North.
