Lions RB David Montgomery suffers a knee injury but returns to the game

It was a terrible start for the Detroit Lions against the Minnesota Vikings, and things only got worse for them early in the first quarter. After trailing 10-0, the Lions tried to convert a third-and-1 with running back David Montgomery. Not only did Montgomery come up short, but he was also injured on the play. Eventually, Montgomery was helped off the field, but he couldn’t put much pressure on his leg.

UPDATE: The Lions have deemed Montgomery questionable to return with a knee injury.

While we don’t have an update on Montgomery’s injury yet, it would be a devastating blow to Detroit’s offense. Just last week, the Lions signed Montgomery to a two-year extension, knowing he played a key role in their offensive identity.

‘He looks too much like us. He is too much a part of us,” Campbell said this week. ‘He’s everything we’re looking for. And we’re not just going to let that guy leave. So I’m glad he’s here to stay.”

Through five games, Montgomery has 351 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns, averaging a career-high 4.7 yards per carry.

If Montgomery can’t return, the Lions will have to rely heavily on second-year running back Jahmyr Gibbs. The Lions also have Craig Reynolds and rookie Sione Vaki active.

We will update this post when there is an update from the team.

UPDATE 2: According to Nolan Bianchi, Montgomery has dropped out and is working on an exercise bike.

UPDATE 3: After sitting out a drive, Montgomery returned to the game.
