Lions top Vikings, 31-29, on Bates’ late field goal

Jake Bates gives the Lions a 31-29 victory with a 44-yard field goal with 15 seconds left, helping Detroit take the lead in the NFC North.

Big drive to finish

Gibbs keeps getting carries as he gains four yards on the final play before the 2-minute warning.

Jones finds a hole and runs for five yards on first down, then only gains a yard on second down. Darnold scrambles right on third-and-4 but his throw is too high for Jefferson as the Lions get a critical stop and the Vikings punt it away. Raymond takes the punt return nine yards to the Detroit 30. (2:41)

After the turnover, Gibbs runs it for four yards with Montgomery sitting on the sidelines. On second-and-4, Goff steps up and has a wide open Raymond but the throw is off and the receiver catches it out of bounds. Goff fumbles on third down but the Lions recover after the Vikings bring the pressure and the Lions have to punt. Fox boots a booming punt, as Khalil Dorsey makes the tackle on Brandon Powell at the Minnesota 22. (4:24)

Montgomery fumbles, Vikings scoop-and-score to take 29-28 lead

Lions look to regain their offensive momentum, but Van Ginkel forces Goff to miss Montgomery on the pass. Montgomery gets the second down run but the ball is punched out by Joshua Metellus, and Pace picks it up and runs down the sideline for a 35-yard scoop-and-score touchdown. The flag is for offensive holding and the touchdown stands. The Vikings go for two as Darnold’s pass to Addison is incomplete as this game has turned for the Lions. (5:50)

Vikings finally stop Lions offense, 51-yard play sets up Vikings field goal as Detroit leads 28-23 late

Starting deep in their own territory, Darnold goes deep and finds Addison for a huge 51-yard completion. Now at the Detroit 40, Anzalone tackles Jones for a 6-yard loss on first down. Darnold scrambles away for nine yards as Davis is flagged for illegal contact to add five more yards and a first down. Minnesota runs a WR pass play for Jefferson, but he’s able to run away for three yards. On second-and-7, the Lions again give Darnold too much time in the pocket as Campbell has to tackle the QB for no gain. Now it’s third down, and Darnold tries to run away again but Rodriguez takes him down for a loss of a yard. Reichard hits the 48-yard field goal to yet again cut into the Lions lead. (6:04)

From their own 30, Lions give it to Gibbs on back-to-back handoff for a total of eight yards on the ground. On third-and-2, Goff comes up clutch again and finds St. Brown down the middle for 16 yards and another third down conversion. Gibbs fights ahead for two yards on first down, then Jonathan Greenard sacks Goff from his blind side and Goff recovers his own fumble to make it third-and-18. Another touchback means the Vikings start at their own 30, as Darnold finds Mundt deep for a big play but a holding penalty makes it first-and-20 for Minnesota. Darnold throws it high to Josh Oliver for five yards, then on second down Nailor catches a perfect ball over Robertson and spins away for a 33-yard reception. On first-and-10 from the Detroit 42, Darnold scrambles away but Addison is called for an offsides penalty to make it first-and-15, as Darnold audibles the play to a 3-yard run for Chandler. Mundt catches the ball on second down but is immediately tackled from behind by Anzalone to make it third-and-9, where Darnold finds Jones for a 17-yard reception and another first down. Jones gets the carry for three yards, then Darnold is sacked for the first time today by Paschal for the final play of the quarter. (End of 3rd Quarter)

Lions overcome multiple second-and-longs, Raymond scores TD as Lions extend lead to 28-17 over Vikings

Lions begin their first drive of the third quarter from their own 30. Goff feels the pressure on first down but somehow gets the ball off to Montgomery for 14 yards and a first down. Montgomery gets the first down carry for six yards, then the next play is negated thanks to a holding penalty on Graham Glasnow to make it second-and-14. After finding Raymond near the sideline for five yards, Goff audibles to an empty set and again finds Raymond for 13 yards and a first down. Goff’s pass to LaPorta is deflected by Pat Jones for Goff’s first incompletion of the day, then the Lions take a quick timeout. After the timeout, Penei Sewell is called for a rare false start penalty to make it second-and-15, where Goff steps up in the pocket and finds Tim Patrick down the middle for 22 yards and a first down. Williams catches a screen for his first reception, but he’s thrown down by Van Ginkel for a 4-yard loss. Lions have scored on four straight possessions and extend their lead again. (5:43)

Possible Lions turnover is overturned, Jefferson scored TD as Vikings cut lead to 21-17

(Start of 3rd Quarter) Vikings start with the ball in the second half, as the kickoff bounces in the landing zone then into the end zone as Minnesota will start at their own 20. Darnold passes it short to Jefferson for 15 yards and a first down, then Darnold goes to Jefferson again but the receiver is stopped by Rodriguez for no gain. There are multiple holding penalties on second down from both teams to reset the down, then Jefferson gains eight yards on the reception as Paschal walks to the sideline again after the play. Now it’s third-and-2 and as Nailor gets the catch then Davis rips the ball away and Branch runs it down the sideline for a touchdown, but review shows Nailor’s foot was down out of bounds before the strip. Vikings retain possession at the Detroit 46 for first-and-10, where Jones finds a hole for a 9-yard gain, then he gets another carry for 10 yards and a first down. (10:42)

In the first play after the break, Gibbs somehow finds the hole for two yards, then Montgomery gets the carry for a yard as the Lions are draining the clock since the Vikings don’t have any timeouts left. Dan Campbell uses his second timeout with 29 seconds left. Gibbs runs it down the middle on third-and-7 and gets in easily for his second touchdown run of the day. Lions offense is rolling now as they have scored on three straight possessions.

Akers returns the kickoff to the Vikings 25, then Darnold finds Jefferson for 15 yards and a quick first down conversion. Jones runs up the middle for four yards, then the running back gets the reception down the sideline for 12 yards and another first down. Jones wrestles ahead for two yards, then Darnold misses a wide-open Jones and underthrows it to Addison as Branch makes the diving interception. It’s his third in two games and now the Lions have the momentum. (5:47)

Montgomery returns, St. Brown dominates as Lions take first lead, up 14-10 against Vikings

Montgomery runs for five yards on first down, then Goff and St. Brown connect for 12 more yards. After Montgomery is flagged for a false start, he gets a run for four yards, then on second down Goff winds it up for St. Brown down the seam and they connect for a 35-yard touchdown. Extra point is good and the Lions have scored touchdowns on two straight possessions to take the lead. (8:39)

The newly signed Cam Akers returns the kickoff to the Minnesota 24, then an illegal formation penalty against Detroit gives the Vikings five more yards. Darnold drops back on first down, then scrambles into the open field for 19 yards and a first down. Jones gets a toss for no gain as Josh Paschal lays on the field for a few seconds before running to the sideline. On second-and-10, Darnold goes deep for Jefferson again on Arnold but it falls incomplete as the Vikings are flagged for illegal formation. Now it’s second-and-15 as Addison is tackled by Brian Branch for a 5-yard reception, then on third down Lions bring another blitz and Branch swats it away from Nailor to force the punt. Raymond fair catches the punt at the Detroit 18. (11:24)

Gibbs’ 45-yard touchdown gives Detroit 10-7 deficit over Vikings

(Start of 2nd Quarter) Detroit starts the second quarter with a Gibbs handoff for four yards, then Goff dumps it off to Gibbs again as he accelerates ahead for a first down. Gibbs gets another carry, going outside and jukes a defender to go 45 yards into the end zone for a touchdown. It’s Gibbs’ longest touchdown run of his young career, as the Lions hit the extra point and this offense has finally shown some life. (13:42)

Lions can’t find rhythm offensively, find themselves down 10-0 early against Vikings

Gibbs will get a bulk of the carries now with Montgomery out, as he runs for four yards. Amon-Ra St. Brown gets his first catch on a screen for eight yards and for Detroit’s first time moving the chains in this game, as that play will end the quarter. (End of 1st Quarter)

Kalif Raymond returns the punt 14 yards as the Lions will start at their own 31. (51 seconds remaining)

Tim Patrick takes the screen pass for a three yard gain, but the Vikings challenge the ruling as it seems that defensive lineman Harrison Phillips may have taken the ball before Patrick was down. After review, the call stands and now Minnesota is out of timeouts for the rest of the first half, as Montgomery and Goff connect again to make it third-and-inches. Montgomery is stopped by Phillips as now the running back is down on the field, then he has to be helped off the field. Lions start from their own 30 again, as this U.S. Bank Stadium crowd gets loud and the Lions use their first timeout. Goff goes play-action to Jahmyr Gibbs for two yards, then Gibbs gains another four on a run to make it third-and-4. The play is called dead as the Vikings use their first timeout, then they only rush three as Goff is forced to scramble ahead for no gain as Minnesota declines another offensive holding penalty. Jack Fox punts it away for the first time since Week 4, with the ball bouncing into the end zone for a touchback. (10:10)

The Vikings will have great field position for their first drive. (12:35)

Kickoff

It’s the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings facing off in one of the biggest games of Week 7. Lions in their all-white uniforms while the Vikings put on their purple uniforms with white pants. Vikings will kick off as the Lions start with the ball.

Preview

It’s another big matchup this week for the Lions, as they’ll play their first NFC North game, against the Vikings, in Minnesota on Sunday.

It’s a matchup between two of the best teams in the division and the NFL. With the Lions at 4-1 and the Vikings as one of two teams still undefeated at 5-0, this proves to be an important game to see who may win the division later in the season.

Detroit’s coming off one of its finest performances in franchise history, a wire-to-wire domination of the Cowboys in a 47-9 victory. The downside is the Lions will be playing their first full game without star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, who will be out indefinitely after surgery for the leg injury he suffered in Dallas.

Minnesota’s coming off a bye week and has been one of the biggest surprises of the season, led by a resurgence from former first-round pick Sam Darnold and one of the best defenses in the league. The Lions will look to find a way to contain Justin Jefferson, who has amassed over 1,000 receiving yards in eight career games against Detroit. In the last matchup between the teams, Jefferson had 12 catches for 192 receiving yards and a touchdown.
