Beginning with the 2024 general election, results in the race for the presidency and control of Congress will begin to pour in.

The first polls on the East Coast closed at 6:00 PM Eastern Time and voting will last six hours until Hawaii and Alaska end at 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM local time respectively. After that, it could be hours or even days before close races are called.

Presidential results by state

Vice President Kamala Harris received the Democratic Party nomination after incumbent President Joe Biden dropped out of the race. The Republican candidate, former President Donald Trump, hopes to prevent her from becoming the first woman ever to become president of the US.

To win the American presidency, a candidate must win 270 of the total 538 electoral votes.

The balance of power of the US Congress

Democrats have had a slight lead in the U.S. Senate for the past two years, but with 33 seats in the Senate in 2024, that balance of power could shift.

Likewise, Republicans are trying to maintain control of the U.S. House of Representatives, but as every two years, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for election.
