Live updates: follow the action around the conference on Decision Day

Atlanta United must win on the road at Orlando City SC. After that, there are three other Eastern Conference games that will impact Atlanta United’s playoff status.

Atlanta United 2-1 Orlando City SC ✅

In addition to a win, Atlanta United needs at least two of the following three outcomes:

1. A LOSS for CF Montréal at home to New York City FC

CF Montreal 2-0 New York City FC❌

2. A LOSS for DC United at home to Charlotte FC

DC United 0-2 Charlotte FC✅

3. Draw OR loss for Philadelphia Union at home to FC Cincinnati

Philadelphia Union 1-2 FC Cincinnati ✅

FULL TIME – ATLANTA UNITED IS PLAYOFF BOUND

In an incredible 90 minutes, Atlanta United secured victory in Orlando. Not only that, the team also received help from other teams in the conference. Wins over Charlotte FC and FC Cincinnati helped Atlanta United move up and extend their season.

Atlanta United has booked a ticket for the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs. They will host the 9-seed and 8-seed CF Montréal in the Wild Card Game on October 22.

89th minute: Orlando City SC goal RETURNED

It looked like Atlanta United’s play-off dreams were shattered when Duncan Maguire scored a volley from close range. However, after VAR the goal was disallowed due to handball.

There is still time left, but Atlanta United’s playoff hopes are still alive.

Charlotte also extended their lead against DC. They were ahead 3-0.

75th minute – Charlotte doubles the lead

Charlotte FC simply did Atlanta another favor by extending their lead over DC United and making the score 2-0.

The goal provides some breathing room and makes it more difficult for DC to qualify for a play-off spot. With 15 minutes to go, if everything checks out, Atlanta United would qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs as the ninth seed.

58th minute – CHARLOTTE BREAKS THE DEADLINE

Charlotte FC has broken the goalless deadlock in the match against DC United and taken a 1-0 lead. This score works in Atlanta’s favor, and tonight Atlanta United scored for the first time all scenarios it should qualify for the Audi 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs.

30 minutes of football to go. Embrace the chaos of Decision Day…

47th minute – Alexey Miranchuk’s penalty is saved, FC Cincinnati scores

Atlanta United were awarded a penalty shortly after halftime. Alexey Miranchuk took the kick for Atlanta United. After converting his previous two PKs for the 5-Stripes, he missed this one, with Orlando goalie Pedro Gallese coming up with a huge save. Atlanta United missed an opportunity to extend their lead and create some breathing room against a talented Orlando City attack.

Meanwhile, FC CIncinnati scored to take a 2-1 lead over Philadelphia Union.

HALF TIME

At halftime, Atlanta United takes care of business with a one-goal lead. They played some very good ball, especially in the opening moments, and that is exactly what interim head coach Rob Valentino’s team wanted.

But the 5-Stripes need a little more help from the other teams in the rest of the conference. FC Cincinnati pulled one back in second-half stoppage time against Philadelphia, helping Atlanta United’s cause. But CF Montréal doubled their lead against NYCFC with a goal from former 5-Stripe Josef Martínez.

Here are the scores at the half:

  • CF Montreal 2-0 NYCFC
  • DC United 0-0 Charlotte FC
  • Philadelphia Union 1-1 FC Cincinnati

If these results held, Atlanta United would finish with 40 points in the standings, but that wouldn’t be enough for the team to qualify for the postseason.

Let’s hope for some more goals from FC Cincinnati, NYCFC and our “friends” (for today) in Queen City in this second half.

42nd minute – Orlando City pulls one back

After two goals, the home team pulled one back in the 42nd minute. After a substitution and an overlapping run produced a long cross, the ball was sent back into the penalty area. Martín Ojeda set up the ball for a header, Orlando’s twelfth header of the season, the highest in MLS.

Atlanta United leads 2-1 over Orlando City SC, but the home team looked mighty dangerous in the closing moments of the first half.

18th minute – CF Montréal opens the scoring against NYCFC

A few minutes after the good news for Atlanta United, they immediately received bad news. CF Montréal opened the scoring in their match against New York City FC in the 18th minute with a goal from Caden Clark.

With CF Montréal three points above Atlanta United in the standings, Atlanta needs a defeat from CF Montréal.

16th minute – Atlanta United doubles the lead!

Atlanta United doubled their lead after a corner kick from Alexey Miranchuk. The ball was deflected by Orlando’s goalkeeper and bounced to Jamal Thiaré at the far post. The striker finished it off and gave Atlanta United an early 2-0 lead.

Going into Saturday’s game, the 5-Stripes wanted to get off to a good start… and they certainly did just that, scoring TWO GOALS in the first sixteen minutes of the game.

SABA TIME! ⏱ Atlanta opens the scoring in the seventh minute

Beautiful combination play, initiated by Tyler Wolff, led to Atlanta United’s opening goal in Florida. In a tight space, Pedro Amador made a nice duel with the club’s season top scorer, Saba Lobjanidze. Before the match, Saba said he was locked in and he showed that with his finish, putting it in the back of the net to give Atlanta United a 1-0 lead on the road.

Atlanta must win today to have a shot at the playoffs no matter what happens in the rest of the conference. Saba’s ninth goal of the season could make a difference to Atlanta’s season if the 5-Stripes can hold on.

Second minute: Philly scores

However, the first goal that did have an impact on Atlanta was scored in the second minute between Philadelphia Union and FC Cincinnati. Quinn Sullivan scored for the Union, giving the team an early lead.

This could hurt Atlanta United as we need a draw or loss to Philadelphia today. But it’s still early. There is still a lot of football to go today.

Early minutes – Goals… from Columbus and Inter Miami CF

We saw the first goals of Decision Day in the early stages of two games. Columbus Crew scored on New York Red Bulls. New England Revolution struck early against Supporters Shield champions Inter Miami CF. Fortunately, neither of these will affect Atlanta United’s position.

6:00 PM ET – Time for kickoff at Inter&Co Stadium

We are approximately 10 minutes away from the kick-off in Florida between Atlanta United and Orlando City SC. All other Eastern Conferences games will also start at the same time.

Atlanta United enters the matchup with 37 points in the table, three points within reach of the final wild card spots.
