Texas A&M football is entering a pivotal stretch with all its College Football Playoff hopes in the final two weeks of the regular season, and Saturday night at Auburn is off to a rocky start: the Aggies trail 21-7 at halftime.

The Tigers jumped on the Aggies early, scoring 21 unanswered points to start the game, helped by a missed Randy Bond field goal and a Marcel Reed interception deep in Auburn territory.

A&M has struggled to stop the running game while giving up explosive plays that put them in a hole.

Auburn finished the first two quarters with 240 yards, including 190 through the air. They were led by freshman wide receiver Cam Coleman who entered the break with four receptions, 112 yards and two touchdowns.

Despite being down at the half, the Aggies have been able to move the football, reaching 168 yards and dominating the time of possession, having the ball for 19 minutes and 27 seconds of the first 30 minutes of gameplay. They just haven’t been able to make money consistently, and their mistakes have resulted in a double-digit deficit at the break.

The Aggies were led by quarterback Marcel Reed who threw for 88 yards and led the team in rushing with 45 yards.

A&M opens the second half with football and will have to make some adjustments if they want to escape Jordan-Hare Stadium with win No. 9.

Amari Daniels runs the ball in from 8 meters to make it 30-28. The extra point pushes A&M’s first lead to 31-28. A 36-yard third-down completion to Jabre Barber was key to the drive.

Entering the fourth quarter down by seven and needing a play, the Aggies’ defense stepped up in a big way. Defensive back B.J. Mayes intercepts a Thornton pass, setting up A&M’s offense at the Tigers’ 15-yard line. However, the Aggies offense failed to gain even one yard and settled for a Bond field goal to cut the deficit to 28-24.

The Aggies’ offense was only two yards and went three and out, and from there Auburn was able to move the ball downfield with ease. The four-play, 55-yard drive took just one minute and 36 seconds off the clock before the Tigers were able to rally for the one-yard score, 28-21.

As bad as the start to the game was for the Aggies, their second half was just as good. After their scoring drive with a three and out on defense, they came back on offense and converted another one-play 73-yard touchdown pass from Reed to Thomas, tying the game at 21-21.

A&M needed to come out of the break with a sense of urgency, and that’s exactly what they did. Starting with the football to open the third quarter, the Aggies orchestrated a 10-play, 76-yard drive capped by a 14-yard touchdown pass from Reed to wide receiver Noah Thomas, 21-14.

Things went poorly for the Aggies in the first half, but they were able to cash in on some much-needed points late in the second quarter. After a 15-play, 75-yard drive, A&M goes into the shotgun, with Terry Bussey taking charge, hitting in from 2 yards out, 21-7.

After losing by two touchdowns, A&M had to answer with a scoring drive of its own to steal back some momentum. Instead, Reed throws an interception in Auburn territory.

The Tigers took advantage of the mistake and drove down the field for a six-play, 88-yard drive capped by Coleman’s second touchdown of the NIGHT, 21-0.

Fresh off an Aggies offensive drive that ended with a missed 54-yard field goal by kicker Randy Bond, the Tigers quickly strike again, this time with a 65-yard touchdown pass from Payton Thorne to freshman Cam Coleman to get into early double digits lead, 14-0.

The Aggies won the toss to start the game and advanced to the second half, putting their defense on the field first. They didn’t get the start they were looking for, however, as the Tigers marched down the field for a 10-play drive capped by a 2-yard touchdown run by running back Jaruqez Hunter to take the early lead, 7 -0.

Texas A&M vs. Auburn Predictions

Tony Catalina: The Aggies know what’s at stake over the next two weeks, and they know it won’t matter if they drop this week’s game against Auburn. I expect A&M to come out locked and focused and take care of business in a tough SEC environment. Texas A&M 27, Auburn 16.

Carlo Golden: This won’t be an easy pre-Texas game. The Aggies aren’t playing great, but they avoid disaster on the road and enter next week’s showdown with Texas with their SEC/CFP dreams still intact. Texas A&M, 24, Auburn 20.
