Severe storms are moving through Minnesota on Thursday. Here’s what to expect.

Severe thunderstorm warning, warnings issued

At around 2:30 p.m., a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for much of Minnesota, including the Twin Cities, through 9 p.m. Thursday.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were also issued for southwestern Minnesota as the storm moves east toward the Twin Cities metro area. In New Ulm, where a severe thunderstorm warning was in effect Thursday afternoon, there were reports of wind damage, with fallen tree limbs, according to social media posts.

Timeline of what to expect

Storms are forecast to arrive in central and western Minnesota around 3 p.m. Thursday, before reaching the Twin Cities metro between 4 and 8 p.m.

This is a fast-moving storm and is expected to clear the area around 10 p.m.

Major storm threats

The Twin Cities metro, St. Cloud and Mankato are at a Level 3 Enhanced Risk for extreme weather. Much of central and southern Minnesota is at a Level 2 Slight Risk for extreme weather. The western edge of the state and areas of northern Minnesota are at a Marginal Risk for extreme weather.

The main threats from this storm are:

  • Wind speeds in excess of 60 mph
  • Downpours
  • Hail the size of a quarter
  • An isolated tornado
