AROUND THE SHIELD – Atlanta Falcons cornerback AJ Terrell collected his first interception in three years in the Falcons’ 38-20 victory over the Carolina Panthers.

Clark Phillips III had a shot at his first career pick with an interception of his own Sunday, but the former University of Utah cornerback opted to pass — or, more accurately, to take a knee.

Former BYU running back Tyler Allgeier ran for 105 yards and a touchdown, and Phillips’ interception with 1:55 remaining helped seal an 18-point win over the Panthers and improve to 4-2 on the season.

When Phillips pulled the pick down, he had nothing but green grass in front of him all the way to the end zone. But the former Utah star knew the moment and slid inside the 5-yard line to let the Falcons run out the clock.

“He’s smart,” Terrell said of Phillips. “I told him, I didn’t even think about that. As soon as I get the ball, you get a free touchdown. But that’s definitely a heads-up play for him, to fall and let the offense back on the field to go.” and close the game.”

Allgeier and running back Bijan Robinson combined for 200 yards and three touchdowns, becoming the first Falcons duo to each gain more than 100 yards from scrimmage since Michael Vick and Jerious Norwood did it in October 2006.

“(We) just kept hitting them, hitting them, hitting them,” Allgeier said after the game, “and we slowly started to weather them.”
