Louisville Forecast: Snow possible Thursday

play

Louisville residents may want to locate their winter coats, hats, gloves and boots as snow is possible Thursday.

The National Weather Service stated in a Wednesday morning update that Louisville will likely see snow, but “confidence is low on impact snow across the area.” As the storm system moves south through Michigan and Indiana, a mix of rain and snow is likely, changing to all snow sometime Thursday afternoon.

NWS meteorologist Evan Webb said the system will bring cooler air into the region with some snow, but temperatures will likely rise again over the weekend.

“Specifically for Louisville, it’s likely we’ll see some snow, but I do think we’ll see some melting on contact initially. We’ll have a hard time accumulating a little bit,” Webb said. “It’s a situation where we’re confident it’s going to snow, but we’re not very confident that we’ll see much.

“It will remain cloudy throughout Friday, but we could see it clearing by Saturday,” he said. “Those clouds are starting to spread from west to east and the sun may appear again on Saturday. It will be warmer again over the weekend.”

Here’s what we know about the prediction.

Will it snow in Louisville?

The Louisville NWS is forecasting light rain with a mix of snow Thursday morning in southern Indiana and Kentucky, mainly north of Interstate 64, with “a transition to all snow sometime in the afternoon.” Temperatures will remain above freezing Thursday through Friday morning, with wind gusts of 20 to 35 mph likely Thursday.

Forecasts of snow include a 30-50% chance of an inch or more east of Interstate 75 and north of I-64, with more snow likely in the broader Cincinnati area. Areas further west and south will generally be less than an inch to almost a trace. “While confidence is high among people experiencing snow,” with more than an inch possible as locals move north into Ohio, impacts are expected to be less severe.

Webb said wind is also something to watch out for as it gets “pretty gusty.”

“Guests of 20 to 35 miles per hour tomorrow as we have possible light snow showers in the area, so anytime you combine wind and snow, the snow could blow around and reduce visibility even further,” Webb said. “That can be a problem at times, just poor visibility and falling snow and quite gusty winds that we’ll have. It’ll be quite chilly all day tomorrow and still quite windy on Friday.”
