A single ticket sold in Texas on Tuesday night won the $810 million Mega Millions jackpot, the second-largest lottery prize this year.

The winning numbers 1, 2, 16, 24, 66 and 6 were won in a quick draw sold at a Murphy USA gas station and convenience store in Sugar Land, Texas, a suburb of Houston.

Tuesday’s winner can choose to receive an annual annuity paid over 30 years or a lump sum payment of $409.3 million.

The prize is the largest jackpot ever won by a Texas lottery player, according to Mega Millions officials. Overall, the Texas ticket is the seventh-largest in Mega Millions history.

A $1.602 billion jackpot purchased at a Neptune Beach, Florida, grocery store in August 2023 remains the largest purse in Mega Millions history.

The largest Mega Millions prize this year came from a winning ticket worth $1.128 billion purchased in March at Rite Aid in Neptune Township, NJ.

In 2013, a player from San Jose split a $648 million prize with a woman from Georgia, the largest Mega Millions jackpot ever won by a Californian.

A ticket purchased Tuesday in the unincorporated town of Floristan, on the California-Nevada border near Truckee, matched five of the six numbers and won a prize of $605,656. Other five-number winners came from Florida, New York and Washington and won $1 million.

According to Carolyn Becker, spokeswoman for the California Lottery, California’s public schools have quietly profited from the lottery, taking home $66.8 million from the jackpot proceeds.

The jackpot has grown since its previous win on June 4, rolling over 27 times. According to Becker, California residents contributed $167 million to the jackpot, with about 40 percent of that going back to schools.

The tournament, which costs $2 per ticket, will be played in 45 states, including Washington, D.C. Drawings will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Tuesday’s prize was only the third Mega Millions jackpot won this year.

For comparison, Friday’s Mega Million jackpot is estimated at $20 million.
