Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade begins as heavy rain hits New York

It may have rained during their parade, but the crowds who gathered for the 100th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade refused to let that dampen their spirits.

Heavy rain and cold conditions are expected to remain steady in the Big Apple Thursday morning — though the poor weather outlook hasn’t stopped millions of parade-goers from donning ponchos, umbrellas and even Turkish hats and taking to the streets of New York City.

The Spirit of New York dance troupe was in good spirits despite the rain and cold, with members wearing bright ponchos over their uniforms as they took the train into the city ahead of the event, which starts at 8:30 a.m. on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

Performers, floats and new balloons like Spider-Man and Minnie Mouse will meander 2.5 miles through downtown to Macy’s Herald Square flagship store on 34th Street.

This year’s parade will feature 17 giant helium-filled character balloons, 22 floats, 15 new and historic inflatables, 11 marching bands, 700 clowns and performances from award-winning entertainers.

New floats this year include a knight and dragon in battle, made from real pasta elements, courtesy of food brand Rao’s, as well as a float celebrating the Bronx Zoo’s 125th anniversary.

“What you see now is what you’re going to get. Cold, cold rain,” Fox Forecast Center meteorologist Jordan Overton told The Post Thursday morning. “Make sure you have a raincoat with you for the rest of the day and throughout the afternoon.”

Lingering rain and dark, heavy clouds will likely loom over the five boroughs for most of the day.

“The intensity will decrease, maybe you’ll have 15-20 minutes of really heavy rain and then maybe 15-20 minutes of light rain. It will be a persistent, messy feeling for most of the day,” Overton said.

Snoopy, Pikachu and Bluey may get soaked, but the iconic balloon characters shouldn’t float away as winds are expected to remain calm throughout Thursday.

While the parade goes on every year rain or shine, Macy’s beloved oversized balloons cannot fly in sustained winds exceeding 23 miles per hour.

“It will probably get up to 10, 15 or maybe even 20 miles per hour in the afternoon, but it won’t be a big factor in terms of the parade, at least not right now,” Overton said.

A reprieve likely won’t come until after Turkey Day, with rain expected to clear well into the afternoon or evening of Thursday.

Black Friday shoppers can also rest easy tonight: clearer conditions are expected to arrive in New York after the holidays.

Although the rain is expected to stop on Friday, shoppers should still bundle up as temperatures are likely to dip into the low 30s overnight.
