Magnitude 5 earthquake near Oregon coast, aftershocks possible

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Feeling a rumble on the Oregon coast? That’s because a A magnitude 5 earthquake struck early Friday morningaccording to the United States Geological Survey.

The USGS reported that the earthquake occurred at 43.695°N 125.693°W – which is 72 miles (117 kilometers) northwest of Barview, Oregon – just before 1 a.m.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5 is strong enough to cause damage.

A Magnitude 5 earthquake could trigger aftershocks nearby, with a 47% chance of smaller Magnitude 3 earthquakes in the area within the next week, USGS said.

“Aftershocks of magnitude 3 and above are large enough to be felt nearby,” the USGS reports. “The number of aftershocks will decrease over time, but a large aftershock could temporarily increase the number of aftershocks.”

No aftershocks were reported Friday morning.
