Major road closures continue in Brunswick County after heavy rains

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Road closures are having a major impact in Cape Fear after Monday’s heavy rains.

NCDOT Division Maintenance Technician Battle Whitley provided an update on road conditions Tuesday.

The largest road closures are on US 17 near Winnabow and NC 211 toward Southport.

211 and East Moore Street in Southport both collapsed.

Southport Police Chief Todd Coring said the city is effectively cut off from northern Brunswick County.

“I have a representative from the North Carolina Highway Patrol here in our EOC, and we don’t have a clear path from the north end of the county right now,” Coring said.

Coring has received at least 48 emergency calls since Monday.

“And that ranged from some kind of firefighting, people stranded in vehicles in floodwater, we had to assist Dosher Hospital, the entrance was flooded,” Dosher explained. “We had several patients in a nearby nursing home across from Dosher. We had to assist with moving about 16 to 18 patients, moving them to a drier area.”

Residents in need of shelter were transferred to South Brunswick Middle School.

Whitley said the next step for NCDOT is to assess the damage.

“There are a number of places where the water has receded and improved that aspect. The problem is we find places, as the water recedes, we find places where the road is damaged,” Whitley said.

As for where the money will come from to fix these roads, Whitley explained that the DOT has emergency funding available. It can also request additional funding from FEMA if needed.

But the question many people are asking is when the roads will open again.

“We are working now, but there are also areas where we have to wait for the water to recede,” Whitley said.
