‘Major setback’: Arne Slot says Liverpool underperformed in defeat to Forest | Liverpool

Arne Slot described Liverpool’s first defeat of his tenure as a “big setback” after being shocked at home by Nottingham Forest.

Callum Hudson-Odoi came off the bench to secure Forest’s first win at Anfield since 1969 and maintain their unbeaten start to the Premier League season. Liverpool enjoyed almost 70% possession throughout the game but were unable to break down Matz Sels.

“It’s a big setback,” Slot said. “When you lose a home game, it’s always a setback and especially when you play against a team, we never know, maybe they’re going all out for a place in the Champions League, but normally this team doesn’t finish in the top 10. When you lose a game against them, it’s a big disappointment, even though they were very well organised and structured.”

Liverpool had scored seven goals and conceded none in their first three games under Slot, but they were falling short. “The possession wasn’t good enough,” Slot said. “We had a lot of possession but only managed to create three, four, five decent chances – that’s far from enough. It wasn’t good enough today because too many individual performances in possession weren’t up to the standards I’ve come to expect from these players.”

Liverpool don’t have much time to recover from the loss, as they begin their Champions League campaign in Milan on Tuesday. “I want to see the same attitude every day after a big win, after a small win, after a draw, after a loss,” Slot said. “Tomorrow we’ll start again, analyse what we did well and what we didn’t do well.

“There were plenty of things we could improve in the game against United, that’s what we showed them, we showed them some good things and that will be the same tomorrow and the day after. But this is a different game to the ones we’ve played so far because we had a low block, so the team we faced played really low and that’s because of the result that we had a lot of possession but we couldn’t create much.”

Nuno EspĂrito Santo brought on Hudson-Odoi and Anthony Elanga, who changed the dynamic of the team and the direction of the game. “(I’m) very happy because a lot of our fans in the stadium weren’t even born (when Forest last won at Anfield), so that tells you how difficult it is,” Nuno said. “Very happy and proud of the work the players did, they worked very hard. In general, we knew how difficult the game was going to be. It’s about taking your chances at the right times. We knew we had to make changes and that affected the game.”
