Manchester airport attack leaves police officers injured, three arrested | UK | News

Three police officers were injured in a brawl at Manchester Airport on Wednesday morning.

The officers were attacked while inspecting an abandoned, uninsured vehicle in the airport’s Terminal 2 car park, resulting in the arrest of three people.

According to Greater Manchester Police (GMP), officers were “confronted” by a man during the investigation. The situation quickly escalated, resulting in an assault on officers.

GMP’s statement described the incident as “unacceptable”, underlining the seriousness of the attack.

“At approximately 7.15am, officers on patrol inspected an abandoned vehicle in an unauthorised location at Manchester Airport. Whilst carrying out enquiries – which revealed the vehicle was uninsured – officers were confronted by a man, assaulting and injuring three of our unarmed officers,” the GMP statement said.

In order to subdue the suspects, police were reportedly forced to deploy a Taser. The three suspects, a man and two women, were subsequently arrested on suspicion of assaulting police officers. All three have since been released on bail pending further enquiries.

GMP added that the investigation into the incident is ongoing, including reviewing body-worn video footage, CCTV footage and other available evidence from the crime scene.

The incident follows a previous altercation at Manchester Airport in July, when a police officer was captured kicking and stamping 19-year-old Fahir Amaaz in the head in the same Terminal Two car park.

Video footage of that event went viral and sparked widespread controversy. A second video later surfaced showing the moments leading up to the “stamp,” in which Amaaz and his brother, Muhammad Amaad, 25, appeared to punch three officers.

Following the July incident, GMP reported that four men remain on police bail and that a “comprehensive dossier of evidence” has been submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service as investigations continue.

In addition, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) confirmed that a GMP officer is under criminal investigation for assault in connection with the brothers’ arrest, while another officer is also under investigation.

Manchester Airport is one of the busiest airports in the UK, handling almost 30 million passengers a year, so these incidents are a major concern for the authorities.
