Map shows states getting the worst snowstorms this weekend

Seven states are expecting additional snowfall this weekend as winter storms move through the western US, with maximum snowfall limits ranging from 13 to 24 inches depending on the state.

An atmospheric river arrived in the Pacific Northwest earlier this week, bringing heavy rain and snow. Blizzard conditions will continue this weekend in the seven western states – Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho, Montana, Utah and Nevada – as the storm rages through the region.

Additional snowfall is expected in each of these states this weekend, with the highest amounts likely in mountainous regions.

Oregon

The heaviest snow in Oregon is expected in the towns of Siskiyou Summit, Howard Prairie, Crescent Lake and Diamond Lake, with up to 20 inches of snow from Sunday evening through Monday.

“Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are likely to become slippery and dangerous. Travel could be very difficult to impossible,” said the winter storm watch from the National Weather Service (NWS) Medford office. “The dangerous conditions may impact commutes on Monday morning and evening.”

Washington

Washington is expecting the most snowfall of all seven states, with up to two feet of heavy snow falling at locations about 2,500 feet in elevation in the Cascades, the NWS office in Seattle warned. Locally, higher amounts are also possible over the region’s highest peaks.

The snowstorm will begin falling late Friday evening and last until Monday evening, the winter storm watch said.

“Snow may briefly change to rain Saturday night through Stevens and Snoqualmie Passes before turning back to snow Sunday evening,” the warning said. “Slushy conditions are possible if rain falls.”

Lower amounts between 1 and 6 inches are expected in valley areas, according to the NWS office in Spokane.

California

Several winter weather warnings are in effect throughout the Golden State, with the highest snowfall expected in Yosemite National Park and Kings Canyon National Park, as well as surrounding regions. Up to 13 centimeters of snow is expected to fall in higher elevations through Friday night.

NWS meteorologist Katrina Hand from the Sacramento office explained Newsweek that the snowy weather was related to the atmospheric river that struck the Pacific Northwest, although the impacts in California were not thought to be of atmospheric river caliber.

The worst of the snow fell overnight on Thursday, but more snow is expected to fall during Friday.

Mountainous areas in the San Diego forecast region are also expecting snow through Friday evening, although lighter amounts of up to 4 inches.

Idaho

Up to 10 inches of snow will fall on high-altitude passes in southern Idaho through Saturday morning, according to a winter weather advisory from the Pocatello office.

The snow would likely impact travel Friday into Saturday morning, especially on the Emigration Pass.

Up to 10 cm of snow was expected in areas below 1500 meters altitude.

Montana

Higher elevations in Montana are expecting up to 4 inches of snow through Saturday morning, with up to 4 inches of snow in low-lying areas.

The Missoula forecast office warned of minor impacts at the lower amounts and moderate impacts at the 3- to 6-inch range. It urged drivers to be careful, especially on Friday evenings.

Utah

Northern Utah is expecting up to 12 inches of snow in the Wasatch Mountains and western Uinta Mountains through Saturday afternoon.

“Winter driving conditions are expected on routes including Sardine Canyon, Parleys Canyon, Big Cottonwood Canyon and Little Cottonwood Canyon,” according to a winter weather advisory issued by the Salt Lake City forecast office. “Snow rates will exceed an inch per hour at times Friday evening through Saturday morning.”

Nevada

Western Nevada was expecting snowfall of up to 10 inches in areas above 7,000 feet through Friday evening. About 1 to 3 centimeters of snow was expected in lower elevations.

“Expect slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions may impact commutes Friday morning and evening,” the Reno office said.
