Marcello Hernandez performs his SNL ‘Domingo’ meme live

That shouldn’t be a surprise Saturday evening live‘s first Gen Z cast member would become a TikTok sensation.

Newly promoted repertory player Marcello Hernandez’s brief appearance as Domingo in the Oct. 12 sketch “Bridesmaid Speech” quickly inspired a TikTok meme. The entire skit, which was built around a parody of Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso,” was a surprise hit, but TikTok users in particular have responded particularly well to Hernandez’s catchy verse.

During a performance at the University of Minnesota last Friday, Hernandez indulged the audience who begged him to repeat his Internet-famous lines from the skit. Five minutes into his set, the comedian agreed. “Let’s make a deal,” he told the crowd. “We’ll do it once and then we’ll put our phones down and you’ll let me tell you the jokes I wrote for you.”

“I have to do it,” Hernandez continued, “and I have to do it in the beginning because it has become a thing.” He then led an audience member through a short training session to help him recreate the sketch. The visitor responded with a reassuring: “I saw it.”

“This is crazy that this is what my life has become,” Hernandez said before launching into an acapella reenactment in which he invited the crowd to sing the lines “straight out of Domingo” and “but we did connect.” Naturally, the performance was received with thunderous applause and shared dozens of times on TikTok.

Just two days earlier, the New York Mets posted a TikTok showing Hernandez getting a jersey with “Domingo” printed on the back, prompting him to sing, “Hey, Mets. I came all the way here, I had to say, straight from Domingo.’

Domingo’s popularity on TikTok has not gone unnoticed SNL‘s writing staff, as evidenced by his verse being used in the October 19 “TikTok” skit as a song choice by fictional user Cat Dancer. Does this mean that Hernandez can be persuaded to reprise his character in the show itself? Never say never.
