Mark Robinson denies reports of racist internet comments, what you need to know

North Carolina Lt. Gov. and Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson allegedly made racist and offensive comments on the forums of a pornography website before entering politics, CNN reported Thursday.

According to CNN’s Andrew Kaczynski and Em Steck, Robinson, a right-wing candidate endorsed by Donald Trump, called himself a “black Nazi!”, supported the reinstatement of slavery and said he preferred the leadership of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler over then-President Barack Obama in 2012, among other racist statements.

The candidate, for whom anti-transgender sentiment was a key plank of his campaign, reportedly made comments saying he enjoyed transgender porn and that he “peeped” in the shower of a women’s gym as a teenager.

Robinson’s campaign denied the messages came from the lieutenant governor in a Facebook video and a statement to USA TODAY, blaming the story on his Democratic opponent, North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein.

The campaign did not make the candidate available for an interview with USA TODAY.

Here’s what you need to know about North Carolina’s lieutenant governor.

Who is Mark Robinson?

The 56-year-old North Carolina lieutenant governor previously worked in the furniture industry, at his wife’s nonprofit Balanced Nutrition Inc. and also served in the U.S. Army Reserve

What positions has Robinson previously held?

No

What are Robinson’s positions on important issues?

Robinson wants to raise teacher pay, but he’s also a big supporter of “school choice” and taxpayer-funded vouchers for private schools. He believes some public schools indoctrinate students, as evidenced by his task force as lieutenant governor called FACTS, which stands for Fairness and Accountability in the Classroom for Teachers and Students.

Robinson also continues to hold firm on gun rights, an issue that thrust him into the spotlight after he delivered an impassioned speech at a Greensboro City Council meeting about Second Amendment rights.

‘Life Begins in the Womb’: Robinson on Abortion

His policy plans for abortion access have been clouded during the campaign. He initially called for a six-week abortion ban, but later backtracked. NBC News recently reported that he hopes to continue restricting abortions if elected. He also wants to cut taxes for North Carolinians, provide better support for veterans and improve public safety.

Robinson has indicated that he would support a complete ban on abortion, saying there is “no compromise on abortion.”

“We need to stand up and declare that life begins in the womb. Life doesn’t begin when Roy Cooper says it begins,” Robinson told a congregation at Winkler’s Grove Baptist Church in Hickory, North Carolina, during his 2020 campaign for lieutenant governor.

The candidate has retracted his statements as lieutenant governor: His campaign has said Robinson would support a ban after a fetal heartbeat is detected, often after six weeks, with exceptions for “extreme situations” such as rape, incest or danger to the mother’s life.

Before Robinson announced his candidacy for governor, he confirmed, after an old Facebook post of his surfaced, that he had paid for the abortion of his then-girlfriend and current wife in 1989.

“It was the hardest decision we’ve ever made. Unfortunately, we made the wrong one,” said Robinson, who appeared alongside his wife Yolanda Hill in a video posted to social media in March 2022. “It’s because of this experience and our spiritual journey that we’re so staunchly pro-life.”

Who supports Mark Robinson?

The current lieutenant governor has received the support of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. The nonprofit his wife runs, Balanced Nutrition Inc., has also come under fire for owing the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services thousands of dollars for failing to comply with various program rules.
