Mattel apologizes after Wicked doll boxes accidentally link to porn website

Eagle-eyed fans have found a disturbing link on the back of Mattel’s new line of Wicked doll boxes.

Ahead of the highly anticipated movie premiere on November 22, starring Ariana Grande as “Glinda” and Cynthia Erivo as “Elphaba,” Mattel launched a line of limited-edition dolls inspired by the stars’ portrayals of the characters originally created by Gregory Maguire .

The famed toy conglomerate provided Target, Amazon and Walmart with Glindas, Elphabas, Nessaroses, Madame Morribles and Fiyeros dolls on September 26, encouraging story lovers to grab their favorite characters for as little as $39.99. Each doll corresponds to the specific actor in the film, and some even have singing abilities.

But while the toy release was intended to generate buzz before the film hits theaters everywhere, fans online pointed out an inappropriate packaging issue that some suggested could potentially lead to a massive recall.

On November 9, a customer went to X to report that a NSFW box error had been found on a Glinda toy on display in the store. Sarah Genao posted side-by-side images of the Glinda toy pack, front and back, with the caption: “The official Mattel Wicked dolls link to a porn site on the box.”

A close-up of the back of the green box showed a link for “www.wicked.com” taped next to the barcode. When you type the URL into a search engine, you will be sent to an age-restricted website that states that you must be 18 years or older to view the uploaded content.

Genao then posted a video of herself flipping a Nessarose box so that the same link could also be seen on the back of another box. She then wrote in the comments that she thought the URL they wanted to share was ‘www.wickedmovie.com’ – the film’s official website, presented by Partners.

When Genao was discovered, he rushed to see if the film’s other merchandise had the same NSFW link plastered on the packaging.

With photos and videos, the concerned fan confirmed the Wicked Lego set and the Betty Crocker Wicked mix did not contain the same link as the alleged Mattel boxes.

Stunned viewers rushed to the comments on Genao’s post to convey their shock.

“That’s a crazy mistake,” wrote one person on

A third said: “I had to Google this at McDonald’s to see if it was true… it is.”

“Incoming reminder? Stickers on the website? What are the chances that these boxes will ultimately be worth anything? asked a curious individual.

Another claimed: “This could be the biggest failure in the history of official merchandise, especially considering it’s aimed at children!”

In a statement sent to The independenta Mattel representative explained that the company was aware of the misprint on the label.

“Mattel was made aware of a misprint on the packaging of the Mattel Wicked collection dolls, sold primarily in the US, which was intended to direct consumers to the official WickedMovie.com landing page. We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to correct it,” the statement said.

“Parents are advised that the misprinted, incorrect website is not suitable for children. Consumers who already own the product are advised to discard the product packaging or hide the link and should contact Mattel customer service for further information.”
