Matthew Mott steps down as England White-Ball head coach

Matthew Mott has resigned as England’s white-ball head coach with immediate effect, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has confirmed. Mott’s departure comes halfway through his four-year contract after leading England to victory in the 2022 T20 World Cup but falling short in recent campaigns.

Under Mott, England won the 2022 T20 World Cup but failed to defend their title in the 2024 edition. They were knocked out in the group stage after a 68-run defeat to India. They also failed to defend their 2019 ODI World Cup title. Reflecting on his time in the squad, Mott expressed his pride in the character and passion of the team.

Assistant coach Marcus Trescothick will take on the role of head coach on an interim basis. Rob Key, ECB Managing Director of England Men’s Cricket, praised Mott’s performance and stressed the need for a new direction. He announced that the search for a full-time replacement has begun, with Trescothick and Captain Jos Buttler leading the team for the upcoming series.

England’s next white-ball series is against arch-rivals Australia, starting on September 11 at The Ageas Bowl, England. (ANI)
