Mavs advised against pairing $125 million forward with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving

The Dallas Mavericks could be looking to make some upgrades to their roster before hosting another championship.

One name on the market that Fadeaway World suggests the Mavs avoid is forward John Collins of the Utah Jazz.

The 6-foot-1 forward is averaging 17.6 points on 53.1% shooting, 8.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game this season. There’s no doubt that Collins’ efficiency and ability to stretch the floor is a huge factor as an asset to any team, but given the Mavs’ current roster structure, it might not make much sense.

The Mavericks already have PJ Washington in the starting position, and while he produces a fraction of what the Wake Forest product can produce on the court, he also costs a fraction of the price.

A package of Washington, Maxi Kleber and Quentin Grimes could potentially appease the Jazz, but the Mavs would likely also have to throw their first-round picks in 2025, 2026 and 2031. Jaden Hardy is also an attractive addition, but he cannot be traded this offseason after signing an extension after September 28.

Collins is a clear upgrade over Washington when you look at the numbers.

The Jazz forward isn’t the most efficient catch-and-shoot 3-point shooter, which could make him a fit in the Mavs’ offense. Still, he’s a reliable finisher around the rim and doesn’t always need to have the ball in his hands to contribute reliably.

The Mavs could do a lot worse than adding Collins to the mix, but the price might be a bit too high for Dallas’ tastes.
