McDonald’s Holiday Pies are back, but so far only in a few southern cities

‘Tis the season of pie.

From the first apple harvest in early fall through December, Southerners embrace the fact that dessert is in season cake. (Who are we kidding? Our love of ice cream pies and fresh strawberry pies in the summer is nothing to joke about either!) But there’s something especially comforting about an apple pie in September, a pumpkin pie in October, a pecan pie. in November, and a made-up chess cake in December. You can exchange these to your heart’s content.

But there’s one more cake people don’t forget when the chill of the ‘ber’ months hits: McDonald’s Holiday Cakes. First introduced in 1999, these portable pies are a fan favorite and return around the holidays with the fast food chain’s signature pie crust, vanilla custard filling, icing and rainbow sprinkles. It’s a little piece of sugar cookie in cake form!

Those outside the South can also find Holiday Pies in the Seattle, Los Angeles, New York City and Cleveland markets.

However, that doesn’t mean the pies won’t appear at other Southern McDonald’s locations. Social media users have already started spotting the pies in the wild and documenting their finds with food blogger @markie_devo (Mark Vayntraub).

He noted that so far the pies have been spotted in Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Arkansas and Pennsylvania.

Several users agreed with the obvious lack of Holiday Pies in their state. “Never available in Florida,” one user wrote. “Never in Oklahoma,” said another. “I’ve been looking for it for three years now.” Fans also shared tips on how to get the most out of the sweets Doing find them – like putting them in the freezer and then baking them when you need a bite of that buttery custard.

McDonald’s Holiday Pies generally stay in stores until the end of the year (last year through December 30, TODAY.com reported), so you might want to grab one of these festive, flaky treats before they’re gone. And if you’re looking for a pie that will appeal wherever you live, try making Big Mama’s Egg Pie at home. You simply can’t beat homemade custard.
