The past month has seen some great football matches with the European Championships and the Copa America, where the best South American and European countries went head to head. Argentina won the Copa America after beating Colombia with an extra-time goal from Lautaro Martinez.

In Germany, England fans were hoping it was time to win a major tournament for the first time since 1966, but Spain thought otherwise.

While England fans licked their wounds and manager Gareth Southgate resigned the next day, one football fan wasn’t disappointed at all. Not only did famed fighter Connor McGregor enjoy watching England lose, he also made a tidy sum of money doing so.

McGregor’s Betting History

As sports betting expert Chirag Dubey explains, the best online betting sites will offer a variety of sports markets and competitive odds. Connor McGregor was fortunate enough to take full advantage of this and earned a million by backing the Spaniards to win.

McGregor would have won even more if Spain had won 3-1, but he was happy with what he did win. The other bet he placed on the European Championship was that Cristiano Ronaldo would win the tournament’s Golden Boot for most goals scored. The Portuguese legend failed to find the net in a major tournament for the first time in his career.

While McGregor isn’t short of a dollar or two thanks to his fighting and film career, he did win more earlier this month by support Nate Diaz in his boxing match with Jorge Masvidal.

The Luck of the Irish in the Euro Final

McGregor had to wait until the 86th minute for Spaniard Mikel Uyarzabel to score the winning goal after substitute Cole Palmer equalised Nico William’s opening goal.

McGregor and the entire Spanish nation were left nervous for a few moments after the late goal as replays were watched to see if there was a possible offside in the action. However, the goal stood and Spain went on to win their record-breaking fourth European Championship.

Neutrals would say the result was fair, with Spain outperforming England in performance. Spain’s prodigious young talent Lamine Yamal, who turned 17 just the day before the final, also provided an assist in the win. He too has a few chances to win, but the future certainly looks bright for this talented Barcelona youngster.

England are moving on to a new chapter following manager Gareth Southgate’s decision to step down after the defeat. This means England will be looking for a new manager and a selection of sports books and crypto gambling sites are already offering chances for the next manager, with current Newcastle manager Eddie Howe in charge.

Why England didn’t have more fans closer to home

Anyone with any understanding of the political tensions between Ireland and England over the years will understand why McGregor backed the Spanish to win. In addition to the Irish, many Scottish and Welsh fans also took to social media to declare their loyalty to the Spanish.

Following this win, McGregor will focus on his fighting career as his scheduled bout at UFC 303 with Michael Chandler has been postponed. An injury forced him to withdrawbut the fight will be rescheduled soon.
