HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – An Alabama A&M linebacker died Wednesday night after suffering an injury during the Magic City Classic in October.

Jefferson County Coroner Matt Angelo confirmed that Medrick Burnett Jr. died Wednesday evening at 5:43 PM at UAB Hospital

Burnett Jr., a redshirt freshman at Alabama A&M, was injured in a head-on collision during the Magic City Classic. He was later carted off the field.

The 20-year-old has played seven games for the Bulldogs this season. This offseason he transferred from Grambling State to Alabama A&M.

Earlier Wednesday, Alabama A&M released a statement announcing Burnett Jr.’s death. was confirmed, but it was withdrawn later that day. After speaking with Burnett Jr.’s family. it was confirmed that he remained in hospital on life support.
