Mega Millions jackpot payout of $575 million for every US state

There hasn’t been a winner since early June, and the Mega Millions jackpot has climbed to $575 million ahead of Tuesday night’s drawing, the ninth-largest jackpot ever.

But don’t expect to take home the full amount if you beat the 1 in 302,575,350 odds of hitting all five white balls, plus the gold Mega Ball.

This is because the jackpot may be lower due to income taxes and the payout you choose.

Your choice of payout can halve the prize pool

For the payout, you can choose an annuity for the full stated jackpot amount paid out over 30 years, or you can take a lump sum of cash that is about half of the jackpot. Although it is less money, the cash upfront payment is more often chosen because it can be reinvested immediately.

Then there’s the taxes. There’s an automatic 24% federal withholding on your winnings because they’re considered income. However, because the jackpot puts you in the highest tax bracket, you’ll likely pay up to 37% on the majority of your winnings when you file your 2024 taxes.

U.S. states also levy income taxes ranging from 2.5% to 10.9% on lottery winnings, further reducing your take-home pay. Eight states do not levy income taxes on lottery winnings: California, Florida, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.

Here are the actual net winnings in each state participating in Mega Millions and Washington, D.C., in alphabetical order. The prizes for both the lump sum and the annuity amounts were calculated by usamega.com.
