Mets sign left-handed reliever Genesis Cabrera to a minor league contract

The Mets added a left-handed bullpen option on Wednesday, signing a 28-year-old Genesis Cabrera to a minor league deal with an invitation to major league spring training.

The left-hander began his career with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2019 and was eventually traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in July 2023.

Cabrera has solid career numbers, with a 3.89 ERA and 8.7 strikeouts per nine innings in 272 appearances, and he has been equally impressive against righties and lefties, holding righties to a .232 average while lefties only .230 hit him.

Cabrera, a native of the Dominican Republic, will have a chance to make the Opening Day roster. Danny Young is currently the only Mets left-handed reliever under contract for next season, along with a fellow left-hander Alex Young non-contracted by the club and Brooks Raley a free agent.
