6:11 – The Wolverines make Max Brosmer look extremely uncomfortable in the pocket. Minnesota’s pass catchers haven’t gotten any separation against Michigan’s secondary. Then on third-and-11, Mason hit Graham right in the gut for a 10-yard sack. Minnesota kicked, but Kechaun Bennett blocked the ball.

7:46 – Sloppy play by the Wolverines, who started on their own 25. Alex Orji was dropped for a 1-yard loss on a QB keeper on first down, then scrambled 2 yards on second down after Kendrick Bell made his route fell. 11:25 – Minnesota started on its own and went backwards before Zeke Berry forced a turnover. He ripped the ball from receiver Daniel Jackson to set up the Wolverines in the red zone.

12:59 – Michigan couldn’t take advantage of a good starting field position starting at its own 39. Colston Loveland reached behind him to make a catch for a 10-yard drive on the first play. On second down, WR Kendrick Bell dropped a pass that would have moved the chains, but it was also wobbly and a bit behind him. Alex Orji threw the ball away on third down, leading to a punt. Michigan has 19 yards on its two drives since the opening touchdown.

3:00 PM – Minnesota starts at its own 13 – the third straight drive inside its 20. A holding penalty on first down put the Gophers behind the sticks, and Rayshaun Benny broke up a pass at the line of scrimmage on second down. They got some distance back on third down, but punted on fourth and third. Minnesota has 65 yards on three drives.

2:01 – Michigan’s run on Alex Orji at QB remains a hit or miss. It started with great field position, but it went three-and-out. Orji held on on third and fourth but was taken a yard short, leading to a punt.

6:28 – The Gophers had another bad kick return, starting at their 20. They had a couple big plays on screen passes and then a 16-yard run from Jaren Mangham. But Michigan’s defense stood tall as the Gophers surpassed 50. On a third-and-8 from the Michigan 34, Michigan CB Jyaire reacted quickly, blowing a quick pass to receiver Daniel Jackson for a three-yard loss. Dragan Kesich attempted a 55-yard field goal in the rain, but scored well.

11:31 – Michigan marched 79 yards in nine plays to take a 7-0 lead. And guess what? It was Kalel Mullings who broke off another long touchdown run. The OL created a huge hole and Mullings burst through, untouched for a 27-yard score. The drive was aided by a 15-yard facemask penalty, but a pretty solid opening drive for Alex Orji, who scrambled 15 yards on a third-and-9 early in the drive and completed 2 of 3 passes for 15 yards.

14:56 – After a brief return, Minnesota starts at its own 14. As rain falls in Michigan Stadium, the Gophers opened with four straight plays, including a QB sneak by Max Brosmer on third-and-1. Minnesota went play-action on its fifth play and rolled Brosmer to his left, but tight end Frank Bierman dropped the pass. Ernest Hausmann forced a punt by blowing up a screen pass to RB Darius Taylor for a loss of five yards.

The Wolverines (3-1, 1-0) are coming off a thrilling 27-24 victory over USC in Alex Orji’s first career start at quarterback. He only passed for 32 yards, but the team rushed for 290 yards behind a career performance by Kalel Mullings.

It wouldn’t be surprising if Michigan continues its run-heavy offense today against a Minnesota defense that was stout against the pass but allowed 272 rushing yards in last week’s 34-17 loss to Iowa.

The Golden Gophers (2-2, 0-1) also lost to North Carolina to open the season before posting back-to-back shutouts against Rhode Island and Nevada.

Michigan has won the past four meetings in the series, including the last game in Ann Arbor in 2017 – a 33-17 win.
