Attack and Kim combine for game-winning drive

Victory for MSU! A perfect two-minute drill led to a game-winning 37-yard field goal by Jonathan Kim, giving Michigan State a 27-24 victory over Maryland.

Aidan Chiles threw for 363 yards and three touchdowns on 24 of 39 passing. He added three interceptions. Nick Marsh caught eight passes for 194 yards and a clutch 77-yard touchdown. Jaron Glover and Montorie Foster also caught touchdowns, while Nate Carter ran for 59 yards. Charles Brantley had an interception as Michigan State went to 2-0 and earned its first Big Ten victory.

Defense strong, attack could provide late lead

Michigan State’s defensive line scores a point on third-and-1, putting the Spartan offense back on the court with 2:12 left in the game, setting up a game-winning drive.

Chiles finds Marsh to even the game (24-24)

Wow. Aidan Chiles to Nick Marsh. Touchdown from 77 yards. We’re tied in the final period.

Defense prevents scoring, still a one-possession game

Still breathing. A missed 41-yard field goal by Maryland keeps MSU alive. Now the turnover-prone offense must mount a drive to keep the game alive. MSU trails 24-17 with 4:22 to go.

Turnover returns ball to MSU

Charles Brantley just gets a nose for the ball. A diving interception gives the Spartans offense a ball back with about 10 minutes left.

Penalties and a turnover stop the drive in the red zone

It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. A 57-yard strike from Aidan Chiles to Nick Marsh put MSU in the red zone. Unfortunately, negative plays forced Michigan State into a long-yard situation. The protection broke down and Chiles saw the ball stripped from him for a turnover. Maryland takes over 24-17.

MSU trails after Maryland TD

Well, one play into the fourth and Michigan State is down 24-17. Edwards found Dylan Wade for a 28-yard touchdown on a blown coverage. Now the offense needs to come up big. Let’s see what they have in store for us.

The third quarter ends with a 17-way tie

MSU had an interception called back after a flag was thrown for questionable pass interference. Now the Spartans must defend themselves on their own turf to start the final quarter. Anyone’s ball game in the fourth quarter.

Relapse after injury fear, attack fades away

Tight end transfer Jack Velling has been relatively quiet this year, but he remains a key part of the plan this season. He was briefly injured on a third-down conversion, but appears to be fine. A touchback on the run gives Maryland the ball.

Turnover converted to points, and we’re back to even terms

MSU’s defense bent but didn’t break. A nice two-play series stopped a Maryland drive inside the 30 and limited the Terps to a field goal. The score was tied at 17 midway through the third quarter.

Promising ride abandoned after second Chiles INT

Brutal. Michigan State reached the edge of the red zone after rushing down the field. Then a holding penalty and an interception in the red zone ended it. The throw found a wide open receiver in the end zone, but the pass sailed and turned into an interception.

50-yard FG puts MSU up 17-14 at halftime

The first end-of-the-half play we saw from Aidan Chiles in a Spartan uniform resulted in points. A late clock sack put Michigan State on the verge of field goal range, but an offside penalty by Maryland pushed the try up 5 yards. Jonathan Kim hit a 50-yarder and MSU led 17-14 at halftime. Michigan State outgained Maryland 214 yards to 142, including 154 through the air. Chiles added two scores and an interception. Nate Carter led the rushing attack with 42 yards, while Jaron Glover caught a touchdown en route to 65 yards and four receptions.

Three-and-out in a row, two-minute timeout approaching

Not much done after the early onslaught. Each team traded three-and-outs, and now Michigan State has the ball deep in their own zone as the two-minute timeout begins.

Bogle firing leads to shutdown

Maryland started in the shadow of its own end zone and had some breathing room, but Khris Bogle was sacked for a loss of 9 yards on a first-and-10, and the defense held strong from there. The Spartans can take control on this coming possession.

All Tied Down After Chiles-Glover Bombing

Woah! Eleven plays for 75 yards and a TD for the Spartans is a good way to respond to a turnover. Jaron Glover got loose behind the defense on second-and-23 and grabbed a 34-yard touchdown from Aidan Chiles to tie the score at 14 with 10:07 left in the half.

Terps score quickly after INT

That didn’t last long. Two plays and 17 yards after the interception return, Billy Edwards ran for a score. MSU trailed, 14-7.

Defense forces stop, Chiles throws an interception

Year 1 of the Jonathan Smith era has proven to be a series of ups and downs. The defense took a hit from a quick stop and the offense followed up a score with a turnover. Aidan Chiles in particular is someone who can be hot and cold throughout the year as he gains experience.

MSU responds with impressive scoring drive

The best offensive run of the year so far begins in game two. Aidan Chiles threw four completions, including a touchdown strike to Montorie Foster Jr. Freshman receiver Nick Marsh caught a first-down pass and Nate Carter got loose for 36 yards on two carries. The score is tied at 7 as we head toward the end of the first quarter.

Maryland scores first on a 75-yard TD drive

That probably wasn’t how the Spartans set up the start of Big Ten play. A 14-play scoring drive by Maryland saw the Terps move the ball in all sorts of ways. The secondary will be put to work today, with Maryland shooting the ball through the air all over the field. Maryland quarterback Billy Edwards was 6-for-8 on the drive.

Prediction

After beating Florida Atlantic in the season opener last weekend, Michigan State travels to Maryland to open Big Ten play. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

The Spartans had their share of offensive struggles in Week 1, committing three turnovers and allowing 16 points in the win over FAU. Quarterback Aidan Chiles and the Spartans will look to raise their game in Week 2.

Defensively, Michigan State committed two turnovers, allowed 10 points and even scored two safety points. After last season’s defense barely put up a fight, it was a welcome sign for the loyal MSU fan base.

Maryland opened the season with a 50-7 win over UConn. Maryland head coach Mike Locksley is in his sixth season and the Terps are coming off an 8-5 campaign. Locksley has a 2-2 record against Michigan State, including a 31-9 win in East Lansing last year.
