Michigan’s win over Michigan State ends with punches thrown

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Michigan’s Colston Loveland and Michigan State defensive end Anthony Jones pushed, shoved and punched helmets, setting off a skirmish that saw the rivals throw punches as the final seconds ticked down the clock Saturday night.

“It was kind of like a heat wave,” Loveland said at a post-game news conference after the Wolverines won 24-17.

Loveland may have cooled during his press conference on the Big Ten Network.

“Lil bro, keep doing little things,” Loveland told BTN on the field. “So MSU is the little brother. They can do whatever they want. We knew it was going to be tough. Everything within the boundaries of the game we do well. And then when they want to get going, we’ll get busy.”

Quarterback Davis Warren got down on one knee to let the remaining time expire when Loveland and Jones became tangled.

Michigan players left the nearby sideline to join the scrum and Michigan State players rushed to join in as well.

“I told the team this was unacceptable,” Michigan coach Sherrone Moore said.

Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith was also disappointed.

“You don’t like to finish like that,” Smith said.

The last time the teams met at the Big House two years ago, a fight broke out in the tunnel, with Spartans punching, kicking and using a helmet to beat Michigan players.

Seven Michigan State players were later charged with crimes and the Big Ten fined the school $100,000. Michigan was reprimanded for failing to provide adequate protection for personnel from both the home and visiting teams when entering and leaving the venue.
