Microsoft service outage hits Outlook and Teams, thousands report issues

Microsoft Corp MSFT faced significant service outages on Monday, with nearly 5,400 people reporting issues with Microsoft 365 on the Down Detector around noon EST.

About 84% of the reports came from Outlook, 10% from Exchange and 6% from Sharepoint.

Nearly 8,500 users reported problems with Microsoft Outlook according to Down Detector, with 67% of the problems related to the website, 22% with the app, and 11% with login issues.

More than 300 users reported issues related to Microsoft Teams through the Down Detector, with 61% of issues related to the server connection, 26% to the website, and 13% to the website.

Microsoft tweeted at 4:06 a.m. ET that users were experiencing issues with Exchange Online and Microsoft Teams calendars.

At 9:03 a.m. ET, the company tweeted that it had deployed a fix that was working in the affected environment. At the same time, it started a manual restart on a subset of affected machines.

At 12:25 PM ET, the company tweeted that the targeted restart was slower than expected for most affected users.

At 5:59 PM ET on Tuesday, it tweeted out incremental fixes for some users and focused on additional workflows to resolve all customers’ issues.

Microsoft’s current status says that users may not be able to access some Microsoft 365 services and features.

OpenAI ChatGPT services also experienced disruption on Monday. Users have noticed increased errors on ChatGPT and API as of 1:20 PM ET. ChatGPT recovered at 2:55 PM ET, and API performance was restored for most customers by 4:30 PM ET. According to Down Detector, the number of reported issues topped 2,100 on Monday.
