Mike Tyson faces health review as ‘almost died’ comment raises concerns ahead of controversial Jake Paul fight

Mike Tyson’s return to the ring could collapse at the last minute.

The boxing legend shocked everyone earlier this year when he revealed he will be ending his 20-year retirement to fight internet celebrity Jake Paul.

They were scheduled to compete against each other in July, but ‘Iron Mike’ suffered an mid-air medical emergency that led to him withdrawing and Paul taking on UFC veteran Mike Perry instead.

Now the former undisputed world heavyweight champion is days away from his rescheduled comeback date, when he will box Paul on November 15 at AT&T Stadium in Texas.

Mike Tyson’s comments could cause problems

According to World Boxing News, Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson is at risk of being called off as the 58-year-old ring legend is on the verge of a health scare after recently admitting he feared he would die during fight camp.

Tyson opened up about his health fears during a Netflix documentary promoting his comeback: “I was training and I was doing great. Then suddenly I started feeling a little tired and I explained to my trainer, “I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”

“When I flew here from Miami, I went to the bathroom and threw up blood. Before I knew it, I was on the floor shitting tar. So I came here (to the hospital) and they discovered that I had a large, twenty-five centimeter ulcer and it was bleeding. All my friends called me like I was dying.

“I asked the doctor if I was going to die and she didn’t say no. She said, “We do have options,” and then I got nervous. I can’t wait to get out of this fucker, I want to fight and start training again.

“I don’t want to die in a hospital bedroom, I want to die in the ring.”

In an interview with Intelligencer, Tyson revealed how bad things were going for him.

He admitted: ‘I’ve had about eight blood transfusions. The doctor said I lost half my blood. I almost died.”

Will Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson continue?

Naturally, Tyson’s comments have raised concerns among fans, who called for the fight to be scrapped before learning of the extent of his health problems.

The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), which oversees the eight-round professional heavyweight bout, insists they will carefully assess Tyson’s health before allowing him to fight a man 31 years his junior.

TLDR communications manager Tela Goodwin said: “Thorough pre-fight physical examinations will be conducted by TDLR-appointed doctors, who will discuss Mr. Tyson’s medical history with him.”

At this point, the health checks seem like just a formality for Tyson. However, given the recent comments about the death, there is a chance that something will be noted during his pre-fight assessment that will result in Paul needing a replacement opponent again.

Fight week is in full swing. Paul and Tyson have already had a face-to-face interview that turned out strange when a pigeon was placed on the table as a gift.

It looks like they are ready to fight. Now Tyson just needs to pass his final health check before lacing up the gloves as a professional for the first time since 2005.
