MLB playoff scores, live updates: Dodgers take on Padres, Mets roll past Phillies in NLDS Game 3

Tuesday belongs to the NL, with Game 3s in each of the National League Division Series.

The Mets topped the Phillies in New York early in the game ahead of a highly anticipated battle in Southern California between the Dodgers and Padres in San Diego.

The New York Mets are one win away from the NLCS.

Sean Manaea pitched seven one-run innings, and the Mets capitalized twice with two outs and the bases loaded, securing a 7-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday. With the win, the Mets took a 2-1 NLDS lead and have a chance to close out the series at home on Wednesday.

The win continues a remarkable run for a Mets team that appeared to be out of the playoff race midway through the season and needed a win on the final day of the regular season to secure its spot in the playoffs.

The Phillies now need to win two in a row to avoid more playoff disappointment in a postseason that many thought was theirs for the taking.

In the second game, Walker Buehler takes the mound for the Dodgers against Michael King for the Padres. King was thoroughly dominant in his first start of the 2024 postseason, throwing seven shutout innings and striking out 12 of the Atlanta Braves in Game 1 of the wild-card series. In 15 career postseason starts, Buehler has a 2.94 ERA, and the Dodgers are 9-5 in those games.

The Padres cruised to a 10-2 victory in Game 2 of this NLDS behind a pair of home runs from Fernando Tatis Jr., and the series is getting spicy as things head toward San Diego.

Here’s a look at Tuesday’s NLDS action:

Live42 updates

  • Michael King struckout Shohei Ohtani for the first out of the game. But Mookie Betts got the best of him with a solo home run for a 1-0 Dodgers lead.

  • Michael King is warming up on the mound and we are just moments away from the first pitch.

  • Welcome to Dave Roberts at Petco Park:

  • Padres fans just greeted Dave Roberts with healthy boos at Petco Park. Here it is a look at all the Padres-Dodgers drama that escalated when Dodgers fans threw stuff at Padres players in Game 2.

  • There is a lot of drama surrounding Game 3 in San Diego, much of it centered on Manny Machado throwing a ball into the Dodgers dugout in Game 2. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was critical of Machado on Monday. He softened his position Tuesday in a pregame interview with Fox Sports, hours after Padres manager Mike Schildt stood up for Machado.

Here is Roberts speaking to Fox Sports ahead of Game 3 when asked about the severity of Machado’s throw:

Not very serious,” Roberts said. “I really don’t think he was trying to hurt anyone. I feel like there was a lot behind that throw when you throw the ball towards the dugout.

“Like I said, I coached Manny. We have a great relationship. He’s an ultimate competitor. Just like us. For me and my guys, we’re focused on today. What happened, happened.”

Here is the throw in question:

  • Padres starters with Michael King on the mound:

  • For the nightcap, here are your Dodgers starters. Freddie Freeman is back and Walker Buehler will take the mound.

  • Mets win, take 2-1 series lead over Phillies

That’s the game. The Phillies fail to score in the ninth, and the New York Mets are one win away from the NLCS.

Sean Manaea pitched seven one-run innings, and the Mets capitalized twice with two outs and the bases loaded to secure a 7–2 victory. With the win, the Mets take a 2-1 NLDS lead and have a chance to close the series at home on Wednesday.

Manaea threw one of the best games of his career, allowing three hits and two walks with six strikeouts in seven innings of work. He left the game in the top of the eighth inning with the shutout intact, but left a runner on first base who came around to score. It doesn’t matter. He took the win after a great performance.

Pete Alonso and Jesse Winkler each hit solo home runs, while Mark Vientos and Jose Iglesias each had two RBI.

  • The Mets leave the eighth with a 7-2 lead, and the Phillies need a three-out miracle to work with.

  • There is more insurance for the Mets. Francisco Lindor hits an RBI double to extend New York’s lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the eighth. New York has runners on second and third base with two outs.

  • Nick Castellanos adds another Phillies run with an RBI single to left field. The top of the eighth inning ends with Alec Bohm lineout to center field.

Philadelphia cuts New York’s lead to 6-2, but still has a lot of work to do with three outs left.

  • The Phillies are on the board. Bryce Harper delivers with two outs and two on in the seventh inning with a single to right field. The RBI single cuts New York’s lead to 6-1 and leaves the bases loaded.

  • Sean Manaea allows a leadoff infield single to Edmundo Sosa, and his day is done. He gets a well-deserved ovation from the Citi Field crowd after seven strong innings.

  • Mets starter Sean Manaea is back out for the eighth inning with a 6-0 lead. He had 87 pitches through seven.

  • A disaster for the Phillies. Jose Iglesias singles off Jose Ruiz with the bases loaded and scores two more runs. Pets Alonso is thrown out at home after a fruitless attempt to score a third point. But the damage has been done.

New York extends its lead to 6-0 over seven innings.

  • Jose Ruiz is on hand for the Phillies to take out the final in the seventh with the bases loaded.

  • Phillies reliever Jose Alvarado gets two outs, but then loads the bases in the seventh. He’s ready.

  • Sean Manaea continues to trade. He retired the Phillies on seven pitches in the seventh, including an inning-ending strikeout of Austin Hays. Mets led 4-0 heading into the seventh inning.

Manaea allowed two hits and walked two in seven shutout innings with six strikeouts. He is in 87 places. Will he be back for the eighth?

  • New York starter Sean Manaea goes back out for the seventh inning with the Mets holding a 4-0 lead.

  • The Mets add. Phillies reliever Orion Kerkering gets two outs after inheriting a bases-loaded jam. But Starling Marte comes through for the Mets with a line-drive single with two outs to score two runs.

Mets doubled their lead to 4-0 before Kerkering got out of the sixth inning without further damage.
