Naomi Osaka wears Nike ruffled outfit during US Open match against Karolína Muchová

Naomi Osaka turned the US Open field into her own fashion show.

The tennis star, 26, wore a black version of her outfit for the event during her match against Karolína Muchová on Thursday, August 29, in New York. Muchová was victorious, knocking out Osaka 6-3, 7-6 (5) to end Osaka’s quest for a third US Open victory.

Osaka’s US Open look included a bomber jacket with a colored ribbon on the back, a tennis dress with a smaller colored bow on the back, and a tiered ruffled skirt. A white ribbon separated the top of the dress from the skirt. She finished off the Nike look with sneakers adorned with a bow on the back.

The mother and co-founder of skin care brand KINLÒ wore a green version of the look during her US Open debut match against Jelena Ostapenko on Tuesday, August 27. The 27-year-old Ostapenko is currently ranked 10th in women’s tennis, while Osaka is ranked 88th.

In Threads ahead of the US Open, Osaka called her look, designed by Nike designer Yoon Ahn, “the best outfit I’ve ever worn.”

Osaka was born in Japan and moved to the US at age 3. She said The New York Times The bow and ruffle details on her outfit are inspired by her Japanese culture.

“I remember the first time I went to Japan and I saw so many frills and bows,” she says.

The athlete also told the newspaper that she was inspired by ballet.

“Actually, my movement coach is a ballerina,” Osaka said. “She’s also my mental coach. So maybe I was thinking about it subconsciously. Before I met her, I thought ballerinas were just flexible, but then I realized they’re all incredibly strong.”

She described the ensemble as a “beautiful piece of clothing.”

Ahn told The Times that references to Japanese culture were important to Osaka from the early stages of the design process.

“She sent me a couple of looks of this ‘Lolita’ goth thing that she was really into at the time,” the designer said. “They go out and wear pink, fringe, bows, lace. It’s all about embracing the cuteness and the girliness.”
