National Weather Service Special Weather Statement for Virginia, Maryland and DC

The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement for Staunton, Augusta County and Waynesboro.

A Hazardous Weather Outlook was issued Thursday afternoon warning of elevated fire conditions, but did not include the weekend.

The latest warning covers Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia. It started on Friday at 1:10 PM and ends on Sunday at 4:00 AM

Elevated fire conditions are now expected to continue due to the combination of dry conditions and gusty winds, especially on Saturday from 9am to 5pm, the weather bureau said on Friday.

Relative humidity values of around 30% are expected during the day, along with sustained northwesterly winds of 25 to 30 km/h and gusts of 40 to 30 km/h. This will result in the rapid drying of fine fuels such as grass, leaves and small shrubs, the statement said.

Residents and visitors are urged to use caution when handling open flames or equipment that produces sparks. Also dispose of cigarette butts, matches and other flammable objects in suitable containers.

Keep vehicles away from dry grass and adhere to local burning bans. Most dry grasses, dead leaves and other tree debris can easily ignite and quickly spread a fire.

Visit the state’s forestry or environmental protection website for more information about wildfire hazards, burn restrictions, and wildfire prevention and education.
